I believe I have deleted something in the process of cleaning up some files off my drive. I also tried to reset the computer afterward. I didn't know at the time that something was preventing the screen display so I turned the PC off manually. On reboot I got the noticfication that I needed to choose some options due to improper/other shutdown. I still continued to get a black screen with the mouse cursor visible. My PC is a SONY VAIO with Windows XP home purchased in late 2001. Any ideas on how to proceed. I have all recovery discs. I am not a PC "handy" person when it comes to the systems and hardware. Just a user. I am accessing the site though work PC, so I amy not see / acknowledge you right away. Thanks in advance for any help.

Yup. Your mouse pointer moves, and Safe Mode gives you the same thing, right? You have a trashed registry from some improper shutdown, so you can't boot into Windows to even do a Windows System Restore-- which is what you need to do. Solved it last week myself without having to resort to a total wipe-out type restore. Here's how:
