    Hello again folks.

    Another "Problem" I have:

I bought a Seagate Blackarmour NAS.
    5TB Raid 5.

It comes with their backup software.

I made a mistake in how I was trying to start the backup of my BOOT partition.
    That's ok.

But I get stuck when I am thrown questions/prompts asking me things I don't understand - though probably SHOULD know.

There are "user names" and "groups" (sorry if I am using the wrong words - they are not usual words and I can't recall them quickly.) and so I made a directory on the NAS for my PC to use as a backup.

I now learned to NOT go to that directory and use another already made directory.

However, when I try to start the backup, I go in, select the partition, tell it the "type" of back up - partial, new, full and a few others.

I select FULL and press the GO button.

It just sits there. Nothing perceivable happening.

I look at the job, and it says it is ok, but isn't running.

I shall try to get screen grabs to help but this is just putting feelers out to see if I can get help.

As this device uses Acronis software, which I'm familiar with, I thought I may be able to offer some advice. However when I accessed the Seagate FAQ expecting to be able to read the user guide, all the links are dead and it was pretty obvious the pages haven't been updated for years. Unless another user pops up I think you will have to provide some detailed info and pics explaining exactly what steps you are following.

OK folks, here is a walk through of what is happening.

    See pictures.

1: this is the starting place.
I go to the BACKUP option - as shown by the arrow.

2: The option I take from there.
I was going to SYSTEM STATE because of what is written, but now know to go to BACKUP.

3: This is where I select which partition to back up.
    Pointed to by arrow.

4: This is the requester I get when making the file.
I can't make a backup there, I have to go into one of the directories.

5: These are the directories available.
DOWNLOAD, PUBLIC and WIKI are the "default" and so I thought I would make a BACKUP directory.
I also made a BLACKSHEEP directory in a failed attempt as that is the name of the computer I am trying to backup.

6: Well this is it nearly set up for the backup.

7: This is where I just stop.
I have clicked on the generate name tab and get this.

    HELP!

This is only here to allow me to add the last two pictures.

The problem is that you have not provided a filename or taken the option for the program to generate a filename. In pic BA.4 just type your preferred filename after the backslash. Then it will start. Alternatively you can add a backslash after Backup in pic BA.7 and type your required filename there, depending on where you want the backup stored.

Thanks for taking the trouble to properly answer the question. It makes resolution so straigtforward.

    Thanks for that.

Not that I am trying to be difficult, but I now have to report that I think I have got past that and it "accepts" the job, but doesn't start.

Stay tuned and I shall try to get piccies of that "failing".

Ok, I tried it today when I remembered.

    These are the latest pictures.

Maybe the path, but I am stuck here now.

What type of user account are you using, a standard user account or an Administrator account? And are you able to browse to and open that location in Windows Explorer?

  10. another village idiot

    another village idiot Private E-2

    AFAIK, a normal account.

But I am not sure about how things are set/defined.

This is what it looks like on the setup page. (BA.11)

There are two paths, "backup" and "blacksheep"

I set one up as the most secure and one allowed FTP.

    Neither work.

I read the manual and I followed the instructions as best I understood to make a "private" backup.

What confuses me are these "GROUPS" and "USERS"

Not having too much LINUX knowledge I don't quite get how they work.

I have a "WORK GROUP", not a DOMAIN.

    Quick secondary question:

The NAS came with 3 directories: PUBLIC DOWNLOAD and WIKI.

Opening my network drives, I can only see the PUBLIC one.

Shouldn't I be able to see the DOWNLOAD one too?

There isn't any such thing as a 'normal' account - it is either an Administrator account or a Standard User account. Administrator has higher privileges, i.e. greater access to files and folders, than a Standard User. Open Control Panel > User Accounts - that will tell you what type you have.

Have to say that while I am au fait with the Acronis backup software used I am completely unfamiliar with the Seagate Blackarmor itself and don't hold out much hope of resolving this for you. You don't say which model you have but have you studied Seagate's support pages?

Yes, but there are terms used there which are over my head.

Dunno why. But it is just not defined/understood for/by me.

I tried to just make the backup on the "main" directory which is first visible when it is called up.

    No luck.

I am sure there is just a subtle thing which I am missing, but as I don't "understand" what is going on, it is difficult to relay the information.

That is why I thought/hoped that the pictures would help.

    Oh well.

    Thanks though.

I shall keep trying, but accept it may be futile.

You haven't answered my question about your user account.

    Apologies.

I am administrator on the PC.

So have you tried to do what the Confirmation popup asks?

  18. another village idiot

    another village idiot Private E-2

Well, yes, it asking for a user name and password.

(Big blush) which one? The computer log in, a nominal one for my security or something else?

As I am logged in as an administrator account, I can't understand why it needs it. I am running the program on the pc, from the pc.

I assume it's the NAS asking for credentials, not your computer. That NAS is designed to be used in a multi-machine network and expects any system wanting to leave stuff on it to have an ID and password, otherwise nothing on it would be secure. Unless it has previously asked you to set up as a user, in which case it's those credentials you need, I assume it's asking you to set them up now before proceeding with your backup. That's what I'm assuming anyway, but it's your NAS and you are the one who should know.

With a bit more research this is what is happening:

BA14 this is the share list.
"Blacksheep" is the computer name. It shows sharing etc.

BA15 shows "who" owns the directory.
    Set to Blacksheep

BA16 shows the list of directories on the NAS.
    I navigate to Blacksheep

BA17 shows I have clicked on the directory.
Now I click on the "check authentication settings" (see red arrow)
See other arrows showing the path and the "TEST" button I press.

    Authentication FAILED comes back.

I have gone into the user list and set the password, but it still doesn't seem to want to "play".
