Hy! I've a notebook which I never have hooked up to the net and don't want to but I DO want to scan it as I've had discs in it from a PC which is apparently infected with various viruses and worms.

Is it possible for me to scan without being hooked up to the net? When I've tried using my Norton scan it won't work.

    cheers

The only way I know how to scan without internet connection is with an A.V. program installed, with current definitions. Sorry, this doesn't help much.

Hmm here in Sweden when you buy computer magazins you often get a cd with demo versions of AV programs like Panda or Norton. If you can get a cd like that, maybe you could try that? It wouldn't be with the latest updates of course, but maybe that doesn't matter so much?

Or download to another computer some kind of AV free program or demo, and burn the setup file to a disk and put it in your computer?

    it is.
However, you need to have many definitions on a cd rom. a good antiviral software and a good adremover and trojan killer. and someone that knows how to use them.

If you do not have any of this, you may want ot reformat the whole thing. It is faster and easier. Also, you get to redo a better system and not input the crap you don't need, such as netmeeting ands stuff like that, like MS chat, for instance. partition your drive (the reason I joined this group) and set the SWP files to that drive. If you have extensive programs that U use alot, then do 3 partions, System; SWP; and Programs drives.

If you MUST have the "stuff" inside, save it to a cd rom (personal files only) and drop them back in.

    Good luck and drive safely!

You can do an up to date scan via boot cd.
You must have a Win XP SP1 CD (files) too.

    Download Bart's PE Maker @ http://www.nu2.nu/download.php?sFile=pebuilder312.zip

    Unzip.

    Open pebuilder312\plugin\mcafee
Read mcafee.htm & dowload the DAT file.

Extract the dat file to the files folder (from instructions above).

Go back to pe root & run PEbuilder.exe
Enter source path to XP files
    Check ISO or Burn
    Click Plugins
Scroll down to McAffee Virus Scan for Win
    Click Enable & Close

    Click Build

All goes well you have a bootable cd to scan with. Boot from it - goto "start" & run McAfee scan.

If you get this you can look into the the other plugin folders & add more tools, like Stinger... and build a new CD.

or, sorry to add another suggestion, spoilt for choice now! you could ask a friend to download AVG free or Avast! virus scanners and put them on a disc for you. When I downloaded AVG from grisoft.com it came with the latest definitions so it should be up to date. Just a suggestion the other ones that are given are all good too.
