I'm sure everyone is sick of hearing about this HP 'blue lights with black screen' at start up.

I was given this laptop for free.

I have put the recovery discs in and can hear the dvd player attempting to boot, but it apparently never is able.

I have attached an external monitor and it is black also.

Is this thing 'DOA' and should I just trash it, or is there something I can do?

Any info is very much appreciated.

    FYI... I have tried:

Unplugging and removing battery and pressing start button

Removed HD and attempted to boot without it

Inserted recovery discs and attempted boot

    Tried F1, F8 and F10 starts

This was a common problem with the DV2000. I have several here that I consider DOA although I understand HP can fix them by doing a forced BIOS flash which requires sending it to HP. I have no idea what they charge.

Here is a very unconventional method that fixes the solder connection. Could be risky!
Normally overheating a laptop is NOT something I would ever suggest doing but since it was free and it appears you have no video, it might be worth a shot.

The method Plodr has offered has been known to work.
There are a few re-running solder methods (I have to say that I had no luck when trying the heat gun method) I was not into the oven method, and the overheating method never worked for me, as I have 'played' with sveral of these different HP laptops.
However, if nothing else works, and you wish to study the ways of re-soldering the chip- and you have removed your hard drive- look at the possibilties-

he descibes the heatgun method very well- in fact the heap of coins might have made the difference, had I tried it, instead of a piece of copper that I used to put extra pressure on the chip when I did a similar exercise.
    If you go to U-TUBE

Apart from the one I linked to, on the right you will see several others giving videos on how to.
I would only try these if you have checked out as HP site recommeends first, and you have no other option, but to bun the motherboard.
    Almost forgot--
If you press quite hard to the right of the mousepad, just below the keyboard, when starting up, you can sometimes get it to show a picture, if it is the graphics chip , as this give a little pressure to help the video chip make a better contact .
