Lots of Browser.exe's in Task Manager but Chrome not even installed

I'm trying to fix my mother-in-law's little Toshiba netbook. They were reporting that it ran incredibly slowly, and when I looked in task manager, I saw lots of browser.exe items that reported to be running in Chrome, but Chrome isn't even installed on the computer.

I ran the Malware protocol, but had trouble getting some of the logs. Roguekiller didn't put a log on the desktop as expected from the instructions. I think I messed up the Malwarebytes one because it didn't happen exactly as the instructions said it would and I missed my chance. I didn't want to re-run it because the instructions said not to. When I opened TDSSkiller, it said "Cannot initialize log". I ran it anyway but sure enough I didn't get a log. HitmanPro and MGLogs are attached.

I basically want permission to start all over and run the whole protocol again.

    Thank you for your help.

Try re running both RogueKiller and Malware Bytes please and see if you can get us the logs. :)

Figured out why I missed it on Malwarebytes. The window is too large to be seen on the netbook's screen and isn't resizable. I had to hook the netbook up to my computer monitor to see the "export log" button. See attached, and thank you!

The below browser.exe is not Chrome it is for the Palemoon version of Firefox you are using. And it is normal to have many of them. The more tabs, the more exe's.

    C:\Users\abbaschild777\AppData\LocalLow\BrowserPale\VolunteerModel\browser.exe

But there will be 10 of them, and seem to be inaccessible. In other words, not actually open on the desktop. One time I got a few of the windows to actually come up and they were for ads and websites we hadn't clicked on. It's as if some program is opening websites and ads in the background without us knowing about it unless we look in Task Manager. For instance, I just booted up the computer, it isn't even connected to a network and task manager shows 11 instances of browser.exe via "Google Chrome" when I haven't even clicked on anything and Chrome isn't even installed on the machine. They're also using up to 100% of the "CPU Usage" and around 75% of "Physical Memory".

Also, RogueKiller seems to find stuff that I haven't cleaned per the instructions. I don't know if that's related or not.

It's possible I'm calling things by the wrong names. Here's a screenshot of what it looks like.

That's quite typical of tabbed browsers. For example with Chrome, even with only 2 tabs it has 4 processes.

Not sure what you meant to say. They are running processes. They are not on your Desktop. They are running when the browser is running. Shutdown the browser or uninstall it if you have problem with it.

If the cable is plugged in then it is connected unless your network card has physically been disabled.

I repeat, it is not chrome. Chrome is chrome.exe. I think you are running a version of Palemoon which is a Firefox based browser. If you are saying that you have not installed anything related to Palemoon then kill all those browser.exe processes and then delete the below folder:

    C:\Users\abbaschild777\AppData\LocalLow\BrowserPale

There are no problems obvious isses in your RogueKiller log unless these BrowserPale items turn out to be fake.

Okay I see from your snapshot why you thought it was chrome. It must be a fake. As I just stated, kill all the browser.exe processes in Task Manager and then delete the folder I gave you.

Is the below something you recognize

    C:\Users\abbaschild777\AppData\Local\ModulatorWireless\ModulatorWireless.dll

Did you miss my last messages and questions??? I think this could be a fairly new form of infection.

Let's just go ahead and remove these items that I questioned.

Uninstall the below programs. If you do not find them or they will not uninstall, just keep going.
    Java(TM) 6 Update 20

Now install the current version of Sun Java from:
Make sure that when you install the new version of Java that you uncheck the Install the Ask Toolbar junkware checkbox. Also if it asks if you want to install McAfee Security Scan Plus that you uncheck this too. You do not need to add these unncessary items and to your PC. Also just in case Oracle changes the Java installation in the future to possibly install other junk, uncheck all but just installing Java.

Please download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Run OTM.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C
(or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy): Do not include the word Code: which is just a title line of
      the code box
    Code:
    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    :Files
    C:\Users\abbaschild777\AppData\Local\004b30
    C:\Users\abbaschild777\AppData\Local\browser_dir
    C:\Users\abbaschild777\AppData\Local\ModulatorWireless
    C:\Users\abbaschild777\AppData\Roaming\004b30

    C:\Users\abbaschild777\AppData\Roaming\2231673711
    C:\Users\abbaschild777\AppData\LocalLow\BrowserPale
    C:\Users\abbaschild777\AppData\Local\ModulatorWireless
    C:\Windows\Temp\*.*
    C:\Users\abbaschild777\AppData\Local\Temp\*.*
    :Commands
    [purity]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large [IMG] button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT may reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting if this happens.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • the JRT.TXT log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were waiting on me. I had just run to the kitchen for a few minutes to get some supper.

I can't figure out how to quote all the quotes, so here are the answers to your questions:

I must be expressing myself poorly. What I’m saying is there is no browser open, no program running. I boot up the computer and immediately all these processes are running and sucking up the resources. If I go into Task Manager, I can see them, but otherwise I don’t see a window open (that’s what I meant by “on the desktop”, I realize that was confusing) or an icon on the toolbar showing an open program I can click on. In that screenshot, the only icon on the toolbar is the Task Manager one.

The computer is not connected via cable and I haven’t connected it to my wireless router yet because I had read some viruses/whatevers can infect the router. I will be connecting it now since I can’t do the protocol you prescribed without internet access. Hope that's ok.

The programs appear to be unkillable, if by “kill” you mean clicking “end process”. I click it and they close and immediately re-open. It seems to know when I’m going after it. The number of “browser.exe”s is constantly changing. It might go down to three if I leave the mouse alone and appear to have walked away, but as soon as I click on anything, especially on one of them, they start replicating themselves again and you can hear the computer’s fan ramp up.

I do not recognize the modulatorwireless thing, but this isn’t my computer. I believe they’ve used this computer only to surf the net. They were running it without virus protection. They had a sealed Kaspersky cd but didn’t know how to install it because the netbook doesn’t have a cd drive for them to load it on.

I will run all the things you recommended now. Thanks!

Okay thanks for the info. Just complete my last instructions and attach the new requested logs and let me know where things stand.

    See attached. Running normally now.

BTW, in case it helps anyone on future posters, Firefox nor Palemoon were actually installed. Also, when I connected to the network, a random video from the 70’s of a guy with arrows started playing. There was no interface to control the video, and no icon on the taskbar to click on. It was just playing full screen. Later another one of a motorcycle started, and then stopped pretty quickly. Could this be someone just trying to get video views????

Anyway, I think we're good now. Waiting for further instructions in case we're not.

One more fix to remove a couple of registry entries that remain.

Run OTM.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

    explorer.exe
    :Reg
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
    "ModulatorWireless"=-
    [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1116904730-1113391541-3159600653-1000\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\run]
    "ModulatorWireless"=-
    :Commands
    [purity]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [start explorer]

    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large [IMG] button.

I think I've got a svchost.exe eating up the resources now. This particular website is running awfully slow on IE.

Also, FYI, after OTM ran, it required a reboot. I clicked "reboot now" and it installed 12 updates. I don't know where they came from unless it was just time and windows' autoupdate is on.

    See logs attached.

UPDATE to previous message: I rebooted and it's running better now. It looks like IE is just really struggling with a "long running script" on majorgeeks. ??

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Yes. Your previous logs showed that Windows Update was running so this was probably why.

Your logs show that you have too little memory to run Windows 7 properly.
    Code:
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 1.00 GB
    Total Physical Memory 0.99 GB
    Available Physical Memory 363 MB
You really need to add at least another 2 GB to get better performance out of your PC. Especially since right now you don't even have any protection software installed and you need to address this.

Your logs are clean. Please complete all of the below final instructions before running any other scans to avoid false detections of things we have already quarantine or left overs from system restore.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    7. If you are running Win 8, Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below to flush restore points:
      • Refer to the instructions for your WIndows version in this link: Disable And Enable System Restore
      • What we want you to do is to first disable System Restore to flush restore points some of which could be infected.
      • Then we want you to Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

  17. jenandlaw

    jenandlaw Private E-2

Ok, I followed all the instructions. I installed AVG free antivirus. On its initial scan it found "Trojan MSIL". It said it cleaned it. Am I still good?

Yes you should be okay as long as you are not having it reappear over and over.
