real time protection finds the within a few minutes of booting.

I followed the directions for removing virus/malware as posted in the forum and I have attached the requested logs.

During the combofix portion, I received an error pev.cfxxe had to shut down. Combofix did complete the scan after I closed this window.

During the RootRepeal portion I received a pop up stating that there was an "error on disk corruption detected - run chkdsk"

After completing the complete process, the virus persists.

Thank you for the welcome. I was sure I attached the file. Not sure why it wasn't uploaded. I have attached it on this post. Additionally, I ran the bitdefender online scan.

    Hello again, magnani

You attached the zipped archive containing the RootRepeal.exe application- not the log created from actually running the program.

    Please attach the RRlog.txt log.

    Hello, magnani

Please delete MGTools.exe from the desktop as it is no longer needed:
    MGtools.exe

I strongly recommend that you clean up this account's Desktop immediately leaving only shortcut links.[ C:\Documents and Settings\Laura Cottrell\Desktop ] Do not store downloads, exe files, iso files....etc on your Desktop. First it is not a safe place to keep them (i.e., you may loose them due to malware, and a cluttered Desktop is an easy hiding place for malware), and last but not least - it can have an effect on your PCs performance.

    Step 1:
Please look in Add/Remove Programs for the following and uninstall if found. If you get any errors just make a note and continue on.
    Step 2:
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Step 3:

Now we need to use ComboFix.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware, firewall...etc) programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. *Remember to re-start them before coming back online.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text inside of the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
      [IMG]
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Step 4:
Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

    Step 5:
Now install the latest Sun Java Runtime Environment

    Step 6:
Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file to your next reply.

    * Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure; and answer this - "What malware problems are you still experiencing?"

Thank you in advance for your help.

During the combofix process a pop-up box appeared stating the PEV.cfxxe has encountered a problem and must shut down.

I could not find these files in the log:

O4 - .DEFAULT Startup: cihiol.exe (User 'Default user')
O4 - .DEFAULT User Startup: cihiol.exe (User 'Default user')

Still having real time virus protection finding problems and computer is bogging down because of HD activity.

What problems are being found? What are the file names and their directory(ies)?

MS Security Essentials identifies mulitipel files as being infected with the ramnit.a virus and within a half hour it lists over 1000 files as infected and can't keep up with the cleaning. It places a heavy burden on the HD and the processor and the machine bogs down.

Step 1: completed and file located and removed.

    Step 2: competed

Combo fix ran as expected. The PEV.cfxxe encountered a problem and had to be stopped pop-up reoccured.

Cut and pasted the script and Combofix ran as expected. A pop-up appeared and said: "Combofix has detected the presence of rootkit activity and needs to reboot the machine."

I allowed the reboot. Combofix ran on its own after reboot and the PEV.cfxxe reoccured.

a rundll pop-up occured and said: "error loading c:\Documents and Settings\Laura Cottrell\applicationdata\a256fb97-162a-4558-be23-08ae4bbcb195_46.avi" "Specified module could not be found"

    Step 3: ran ccleaner

    Step 4: installed java runtime

Step 5: ran mgtools get logs

I have attached the requested files. I included the log from the first combofix and the second combofix which reran upon boot-up after recognizing the rootkit activity.

As soon as MS Security Essentials starts it identifies what it calls: "Virus:Win32/Ramnit.A" It suspends the activity but there are hundreds of them. I have attached a few paths taken from the details in MS Security Essentials and attached them as a text file. It is not a complete list as the number of files is very large.

I asked the computer use when problems starting occurring, and she said it was around the time she was researching South America and downloaded a desktop wall paper.

Thank you again for your continued help.

Not seeing much in the way of malware. It looks like MsSE is doing it's job.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now copy just the bold text below to notepad (Do not include any space above the word REGEDIT). Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now use windows explorer to find and delete:
    c:\documents and settings\Laura Cottrell\Application Data\Duhi
    c:\documents and settings\Laura Cottrell\Application Data\Lyaly
    c:\documents and settings\Laura Cottrell\Application Data\Imedbi
    c:\documents and settings\Laura Cottrell\Application Data\Waiwoh

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

  12. magnani

    magnani Private E-2

Found and removed the F2 file as requested.

    Received confirmation the fixME.reg worked.

I deleted the "Lyaly" file. The others were not present.

    Hijack this gave two errors:

    1st: Hijackthis error please report
An unexpected error has occurred at procedure:modMain-fixunixhostsFile()
    Error #70 - Permission denied
    Windows Version NT 5.01.2600
    MSIVersion 7.0.573013
    Hijackthis Version 2.0.4

2nd: Your host file has invalid linebreaks and Hijackthis is unable to fix this. 01 items will not be displayed
    Click ok to continue

MS Sec. Ess. immediately started identifying virus threats during this process. I have it turned off and verified this several times. Should I uninstall MSES while trying to clean the pc?

When trying search the internet I was redirected to other sites.

Ran the MGtools and deleted the requested files.

Ran Combofix and it accepted the script.

    Ran HostsXpert as instructed.

The avi file is gone and the redirection has stopped while surfing the web. The MSSE program is continueing to identify the "ramnit" virus and sucking pc resources.

These two files seem out of place and I am not familiar with them:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Laura Cottrell\Application Data\Etosf\umyn.oge

After 20 minutes of allowing MSSE to scan and clean, running ccleaner and then rebooting, things seem to have calmed down and are running smoothly. I will give an update tomorrow on the status. I don't want to claim victory for you too soon, but you may have cleaned it.

Thank you, and I will update in the am.

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop

    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

You were right. We had redirection issues this morning and MSSE found infected files.

    Ran MG tools as directed.

    Ran Combofix as directed.
MS IE opened on its own and redirected to a questionable site and a pop-up warned and asked if I wanted to navigate away from the site. I opened Task Manager and closed the application and pop-up from there. Combofix froze, so I had to restart by dragging the script file over the icon again.

    Combofix then ran as expected.

Ran MBR check and there was nothing found.

I keep forgetting you are on a Dell.

    Let's continue:

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Download TDSSKiller from Kaspersky to your directly onto your Desktop

    • Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor. )
    • Allow the application to run if prompted by Windows or any security programs you have installed
    • It will start the scan and run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
    • Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
    • Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

Good to know!! And you are most welcome.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
