    Time for a new thread!

Since we have more time dedicated to folding than most, I felt it would be appropriate to run a "F@H Tweak Lab" of sorts, where we can try out tweaks and see whether they are worth publishing publically.

If we could help develop these tweaks by publishing ideas and results to help improve them, once we have got the tweak to a "final stage", we can post them in the main forum for all to see.

It will make our team as a whole more productive, and we can have fun working on the tweaks together!

At the moment we're working on two tweaks. The first is mgrist who is working on HT (which is nearly done as of this writing), and I am looking for a suitable method of testing an overclock for reliability when folding. I will post my results as soon as I have them, along with some sort of a conclusion as to whether its feasible.

    The Hyperthreading experiment.
On the 3.2 HT I usally do a tinker (400 frames) at 5 or 6 mins a frame, call it 6 mins which is 40 hours It is now taking 9 mins. which is 60 hours
The duel unit that is running (100 frames) now usally runs at 6 mins but is now running at 9 mins used to take ten hours now takes 15 hours. Looks to me like I'm losing and my mind is blank. I'm just to tired or old to get the numbers figured out tonight. What say you guys?

    My lightbulb just blinked
If I had two tinkers going it would take me 60 minutes to finish both. Where as if I ran two tinkers in sucsession it would take 80 hours so I guess Hyperthreading does have some gain. Still need to hear from you guys though like I said my lightbulb just blinked it didn't stay on.

A tinker is a core used to computer a work unit. There should be a thread in the FAQ in the main forum about it... if not I'll put one there.

Ah... Does that mean it was a serious question? Forgive me I just figured I spelled tinker wrong and he was teasing me. So in essence he spelled tinker wrong, I guess I can tease him now????????????????

    Hey mgrist,

    http://forum.folding-community.org/viewtopic.php?t=11191
has some good chatter about HT technology.
Sounds like there is pros and cons.
Also on the folding forum I saw some ways to use HT, but couldnt find them easily just now. If You have seen this stuff just ignore me!!! :)

As long as its subtle ;)

I've found that checking for stability is VITAL for overclocked folding rigs. If Prime95 fails, you're going to give out duds. Which means you must have good quality gear and decent cooling or its not worth the effort if you're trying to speed up your production rate.

Hey Martinch thanks for the link. I've been through that site a few times but only half heartedly.
I've come to the conclusion that 2 units on a HT machine will definitly get you more points. But I've also come to the conclusion that I'm doing this for the research as well as for fun etc... Vjay Pande says for science's sake it is better to do one unit at a time and get them sent in quicker. So I'm going back to doing one unit at a time on that machine.

I'm an admin on outcasts so I can go back and edit when I need to, which is most of the time. Here at MG I'm just a lowly peon so must learn to live with my mistakes. Oh well such is life and it teaches me humility :D

Three of them are not even in a case and the covers on both sides of the others are off so yea there is a certain hum ;) When everything is off though it's really rather spooky, real quite but also cooler :D
