I'm having a small problem. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 inside of a virtual machine. I am trying to run a traceroute on a server located in France but all that I get back is a bunch of timeouts ( * * *) for each hop. Does anyone know why this is happening? I suspect it has something to do with how my VM communicates with the rest of my network but I'm not sure.

I've attached a picture below to show you what's happening.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

    Hi OverCooked,
I have Ubuntu 9.04 in Player 3.0 on my machine. I just tried a traceroute to the same server and got 18 hops before it timed out on a server in France.
Do you have your Network Adapter set to NAT in the VM preferences? You might try a Bridged set up. Can you use Firefox from Ubuntu and get online?
I notice your IP is a 192.168.254.x and you are not hitting a gateway of any kind. Most consumer routers are set for 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1 so that would be the first hop as the gateway.

try using a different distro in your vm it might be the way your current one is set up, i would suggest doing a traceroute in puppy to see if its your vm or youq operating system

Yup my network adapter is set to NAT in my preferences. I gave a bridged setup a try but i lost all internet access. I'm able to surf the net from Firefox inside the VM when its set to NAT.

Here are the results of my ipconfig from my windows 7 desktop, it shows my network adapter as well as information for my VM network adapters.

My IP addresses for my VM are not matching up with my IP for my desktop. I think the problem lies here but I don't know what to change.

Neither of the VM adapters have a gateway listed. I'm not sure how FF is getting online from that set up.
You could try setting up the connection manually instead of automatically.
Right click the network icon at the top of the Ubuntu screen, choose the adapter that is connected and select Edit Connection. 1 of the tabs will let you change the DHCP from automatic to manual. Check your router for the range of IP addresses it has to assign. (For example, Linksys 54G router at default uses a range of 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.149 to assign addresses.)
Choose an IP in the upper part of your router's range, say 192.168.0.125 if it goes that high. That will keep the conflicts down from existing addresses. Subnet should be 255.255.255.0 . The gateway should be 192.168.0.1 which is your router's address. You may have to reboot Ubuntu at this point.
    Give that a try.
