Hi ! First time caller, first time laptop owner...

I got a vaio laptop VGN-fw41M windows Vista 32 bit, service package 2 and

    ATI Mobility Radeon HD4650 card. (version7.01.01871 i think :S)

OS: windows Vista (service package 2 600 2, version 6.0.6002)

    Bios version/date: American megatrends inc. R3110Y0, 27/08-09

    SM Bios version: 2,4

(Info found last night via catalyst i think, got late and had a million pages up :p)

Its the type where you can reboot or whats it called, and theres stuff hidden somewhere i dont know, to make it happen.

Well i bought it i think in 2007-8'ish and have rebooted a couple of times without "much" hassle but this time around im without vaio support when it comes to my grafic card/driver thingy updates...
I just get that message "Your model information could not...again later. (messageID=0008)

So i got steam and via that ifound the AMD page and there i have tried several ways of getting updated...

    1. I tried downloading the "help program" that detects, downloads and installs (catalyst bythe way) =

"AMD Catalyst mobility cannot be downloaded cause of inkompatible
    hardware/software.
The grafic adapter version is not supported. contact the producer of
computer to get and update ofr the grafic driver"

(translated from danish but it should be correct)

    2. Downloaded it myself and saved it to a folder on my desktop so i easilly could find it. Then followed the video instructions on their page. Uninstalling and so on (http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx)

Failed again... = rebooted and started over

tried figuring out what was out of date or what the problem was.... Read somethign bout chipsets and whatnut but since i am just a "point and click" kinda guy....
Then i found this page and the slimdriver thing, tired and grumpy i felt a rush when one of you guys recommende it. Woosh download, sent to work getting my card updated seemingly no problem at all took seconds but i tried testing it the card i mean, via the game skyrim wich when i installed it the first time, gave me high setting in grafics but got low this time around so im guessing it didnt work out....

So please help me figuring this out, before i do something i might regret...
    Vaio meet pavement :-D

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

Greetings, Computhawhat, and welcome to MajorGeeks...

If I'm reading your sequence of events correctly, it sounds as if you might have downloaded/installed a Windows update. Windows is great, but some of their driver updates tend to be lacking sometimes.

I suggest installing your original ATI software, either from your driver recovery disks or from this Sony page, see if your symptoms change. If not, at least we've got a known video driver baseline from which to proceed.

Thank you for the quick reply :)

    I will give it a go :)

And yes, well there was like a hundred + updates after the rebooot so its quite possible ive downloaded and indstalled something via those automatic updates....

By the way even though skyrim set my graphics to high i had to throttle down a wee bit on all that filtering and antiali-something :/

Also when it restarted it configured updates. You know before it gets to the desktop.

I am really ill equipted to figure this out.... I NEED a major geek hehe

If you can copy the minidump files to your desktop, zip them and then upload and attach the resulting zip file, I might be able to debug further and check for old/incompatible drivers.

Hi Satrow thanks for pitching in for a noob here.

And also thank you Caliban, for getting me on the right track.

    I greatly apreaciate it.

Hope these will help clarify something wich you then can translate for me to understand, so i can get this ehmm.. vaio back in working shape hehe

    yk60x86.sys - Marvell Yukon Network driver, http://www.marvell.com/support.html,
    Less old:
PxHelp20.sys - Sonic CD/DVD driver (used by many different CD/DVD programs), http://www.carrona.org/pxhelp20.html Go to C:WindowsSystem32drivers and rename PxHelp20.sys to PXHelp20.BAK This will break your CD/DVD program, but can easily be renamed after we've finished,

    DRIVER_CORRUPTED_EXPOOL (c5)
An attempt was made to access a pageable (or completely invalid) address at an
interrupt request level (IRQL) that is too high. This is
caused by drivers that have corrupted the system pool. Run the driver
verifier against any new (or suspect) drivers, and if that doesn't turn up
the culprit, then use gflags to enable special pool.
    Arguments:
    Arg1: 07db17f8, memory referenced
    Arg2: 00000002, IRQL
    Arg3: 00000000, value 0 = read operation, 1 = write operation

The basic debug output seems to confirm that it's graphics driver related, DEFAULT_BUCKET_ID: VISTA_DRIVER_FAULT

PROCESS_NAME: dwm.exe (Windows Desktop Manager AKA Aero) - but the actual trigger may yet lie elsewhere.

So, from the top: update the oldest drivers as best you can - pay special attention to the comments on SFEP.sys, it might play a big factor here.

The second 0xC5 looks like it's pointing to the network driver, NETw5v32.sys, as the culprit but it could have been triggered by a different bad driver loading or, possibly bad memory:

Right now, I'm pretty tired and am about to try to get some sleep (I'm hoping usamsa will call by and show us how to debug this properly, or at least point you to the next test - Driver Verifier or hardware tests maybe), I'll call back after some rest to check how many newer drivers you've found and installed ;)

    Hi again...

Well been trying to update but my laptop model only appears at the danish site:

    http://www.sony.dk/support/da/product/VGN-FW41M_H/updates

these are what i have to work with from sony. Sadly the more of your links i go to, the more i fear that i cannot figure this out. So sorry if im taking babysteps but i really dont wanna screw up.

    current status:

    1. Not sure what i should download from the danish Sony page, to update the:

    DMICALL.sys
Apfiltr.sys - Alps pointing device, OEM
rimsptsk.sys - Ricoh Memory Card Reader driver, OEM

Found the SFEP but think i need a friend to walk me trough the whole file installation thing. He knows just a wee bit more than i do so... Crossing fingers :)

    2. When it comes to Conexant, im gonna save that one for later, when im a bit more clearheaded.

    3. The Marvel page for the Yukon adapter. Tried under the driver downloads, to do it via partial number but then the page came up empty. :mad

    http://www.marvell.com/support/downloads/search.do

I got the Marvell Yukon 88E8055 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller
So should i download this one or ?

WINDOWS VISTA X86 DRIVER (32-BIT) FOR YUKON DEVICES

So this is as far as i have come. Btw it has begun to "configure updates" every time i start this... Vaio even though it doesnt seem, to me atleast, that there have been downloaded any...
If it could help i will gladly give remote access ?

Concentrate on getting the SFEP.sys updated, current date is 8/3/2007, judging by the drivers listed at the Sony site, it must be an Application/Utility (Program/funktion)?

Update as much as you can from the Sony page for your model and Windows version, note any that fail, attach any more minidumps you might get.
