    Question #1

    Question:
Where this article says to go into the registry, find the ZoneAlarm key, find the values "BlockCount" and "HackCount" and "You can change these values as you like" -- what does that mean? I haven't gone in there yet but does that mean we wipe out the number there and type in zeros?

FYI: I've updated to ZA 5.0.590 free and it's been running nice and SMOOTH

yes pegg, once you find those keys you right click and select modify and in the Value Data you enter 0

to be honest if your not worried about the numbers of blocks ZA has done I wouldnt bother adjusting it..

I've not migrated to v5 yet must do that soon...... any different that 4.5?

    Re: Question #1

Thanks for your answers -- I wouldn't have "right clicked" so...

Um, different? Well, I figure when they make a new version, something's different! :) I waited for the "lounge off" forum guys to comment and when they didn't have a problem, I installed it and everything's great.

Doesn't really answer your question, but I generally do updates when they come out.

    Re: Question #1

I do update BUT generally leave it for a month or so, lets me see what bugs are in latest versions before updating.... I used to have a spare machine to do tests on but sold that one, next time I build a new one I will have this one as test machine... sadly I need this machine working 100% so doing software and tweak tests are rare ( I do have an image of my Raid OS drive so its not really a problem more of a nuisence )

might pop v5 on and see if it plays ball with my AV

Halo I'm sure you've heard of the problems some folks are having with the 5.x version.

Hang on to your 4.5x setup file just in case ;)

    Re: Question #1

Wise advice. I think there were more problems with the first version of 5.x. I've got 5.0.590.043

    Re: Question #1

Zone Labs definitely rushed the first ver 5 out the door before it was ready.
    (Marketing people  )
After the resulting outcry they released an update ver to address the issues, but the damage was done and their rep was tarnished. I'm just one of the users that dumped ZA for another firewall (Sygate in my case), but I do hope they're getting their act together.

    Re: Question #1

alanC, like pegg, I've got ZA 5.0.590.043 running with Avast. No problems with either. Both have been installed for some time now. Not sure how long, but at least weeks. Baz

    Hey pompste,

Come back some time and let us know if you were able to reset the numbers.

Also, you gonna take the leap to v. 5.0.590.043?
(No, really, I'm NOT a Zone Alarm fanatic. Just be sure to run an up-to-date firewall, that's all)

    I maintain a friend's PC that has ZA 5.x

So far no problems, but I'm trying to keep a close eye on it.

    Re: @pompste

I think i`ll wait for a dependable update that includes the option to reset the numbers before i deal with "regedit" to reset them.I have not updated to latest version yet because of many users reporting problems with it.All have recommended staying with version 4.5----it stealths all ports and thats all i really need.
I recently dumped mcafee firewall 5.0 because of major update problems.Really like ZA free 4.5 except for browser leaks that shows up at PCFLANK.COM----i`m happy being stealthed for free.
THANKS AGAIN TO ALL WHO RESPONDED

Well, I updated to 5.0.590.043 a couple of days ago.
Noticed yesterday and today things not quite right. Have MSN Messenger back in my systray. Also, when I came online today had 2 porn popups come up. Have never been to a porn site.
Now I am paranoid. Hope it isn't anything, but am going to run all my scans. (virus and spybot)
    Am running housetrend right now.
I am running XP yes, still using IE, but that may change today as I have some time to download to another.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr..............thought I was doing everything I could to keep these things off my computer.

As far as I'm aware ZA 5.0 is still a Beta version. Tried it but had problems. Went back to ZA 4.5.

ZA 5 is the final release version, however as AlanC said earlier in this thread, Zone Labs in trying to keep up with the rest of the market ( McAfee & Symantec with there joint AV & Firewall apps ) did rush this release as its their first venture into anti virus and as a concequence it dont play along with some AVs or system setups, for some it works ok for others its a nightmare.

Alan... I most likely will wait until a further step is made on version 5 before upgrading, altho just for curiositys sake I may make an Image and install 5 just to see if it will play with McAfee 7 ok.

pegg... yes that registry hack works well, I adjusted the figures lastnight and on reboot they both say 0 now... I only have any numbers in those locations when i've taken the router out of the loop and then ZA gets the hits the router normally stops.
