In the last few hours, I've seen that this is becoming a major problem. My work revolves around the internet, therefore I'm in a tough spot right now.

I tried posting on Malwarebytes forum, but noticed that most Threads there go unresponded to.

I would just try to fix this by reading another thread started by someone else, but thought with all the log postings, maybe I'd do more harm than good.

Can someone please help me with this. I am on a different computer, so I can get back to check on any updates you might have for me very quickly. Thank you so much.

ps - I'm running Windows XP, and currently have malwarebytes installed. (which has worked well so far, until this)

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please read ALL of this message including the notes before doing anything.

Please follow the instructions in the below link:

READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.
    • **** If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going. ****
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not. MGtools will frequently run even when all other tools will not.

    • After completing the READ & RUN ME and attaching your logs, make sure that you tell us what problems still remain ( if any still do )!
    Helpful Notes:
    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode, you can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME) onto another PC and then burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. If you cannot seem to login to an infected user account, try using a different user account (if you have one) in either normal or safe boot mode and running only SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes while logged into this other user account. Then reboot and see if you can log into the problem user account. If you can then run SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, ComboFix and MGtools on the infected account as requested in the instructions.
    4. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is strongly advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.

Thanks for responding to me. Here's the update. I literally just finished running the last tool you suggested (MGTools). As of right now, I'm not getting any IE redirects or popups. But, like I said, I literally just finished 5 minutes ago. I'll go ahead and post all the logs from the tools ran, and see if anything happens.

Run TDSSkiller again a look for the below two items and quarantine or delete these:
    Code:
    08:44:16.0453 2564 z525obex ( Backdoor.Multi.ZAccess.gen ) - skipped by user
    08:44:16.0453 2564 z525obex ( Backdoor.Multi.ZAccess.gen ) - User select action: Skip
Also, please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.

    Download Mirror #1

    Download Mirror #2
    • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
    • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
      Code:
      :filefind
      serial.sys
      afd.sys

    • Click the Look button to start the scan.
    • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. You can just close this notepad window since the log is already saved on your Desktop. Be patient! It may look like it is not doing anything, but it takes awhile for this to scan thru your whole system look for matches.
    • Please attach the SystemLook.txt log found on your Desktop to next reply.
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: ShopAtHome.com Toolbar - {66516A07-F617-488A-90CF-4E690CFB3C5F} - C:\Program Files\ShopAtHome\tbcore3U.dll
    O3 - Toolbar: ShopAtHome.com Toolbar - {311B58DC-A4DC-4B04-B1B5-60299AD3D803} - C:\Program Files\ShopAtHome\tbcore3U.dll
    O23 - Service: TBPanel (datunidr) - Unknown owner - \\.\globalrootC:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe (file missing)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Uninstall the below software:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 26
    ShopAtHome.com Toolbar

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it has expired or need to be updated to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up because you recieve the following error: Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion then you will need to reboot your computer which will normally fix this problem.

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the SystemLook log
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

You are missing the c:\windows\system32\drivers\Serial.sys driver file. Do you have your Windows XP SP3 CD?

Also the below folder failed to be deleted. Can you see it? You may not see it since the rootkit probably is still hiding it. If you can see it, check if you can delete it.
    c:\windows\$NtUninstallKB20194$

Sorry, I would have responded yesterday, but I didn't get an email saying you responded. I do have the XP SP 3 cd (for refurbished machines).

And it would not let me delete the folder you mentioned. I could see it, but not delete it.

The serial.sys file did not copy properly. These may be due to the fact that Combofix has expired and ran in Reduced Functionality Mode.

See if you can manually copy the below file

    C:\Documents and Settings\B. Sites\Desktop\serial.sys

    into your C:\Windows\system32\drivers folder.

Make sure that it is still showing in the C:\Windows\system32\drivers folder after a reboot.

    Interesting. Let's try another fix.

First delete the ComboFix.exe file that you have right now.
Now download the most recent version from >> ComboFix
Save it to your Desktop but don't run it until requested in the below instructions.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista or Win7, make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt

Okay that is much better but the serial.sys file still did not get copied to the drivers folder. I don't know what is blocking now since the infection appears to be removed.

If everything is running okay, perhaps we can just ignore this.

  23. bsites9

    bsites9 Private E-2

Yes, everything does seem to be running OK, other than my USB ports still acting up, but that's been going on before this issue anyway.

Is there something I should be looking for specifically involving the serial.sys?

  24. chaslang

We are just concerned about the fact that it is missing from the drivers folder and the fact that it appears to not want to be copied there. Let's try the below.

    Now download SubInACL.msi from Microsoft.
    • Now double click on SubInACL.msi to run the installer. Accept any prompts you get about installing this.
    • Now download the below file and save it to your Desktop:
    • Now double click on resetperm.cmd to run this script. Be patient as this may take awhile to run.
Once it finishes, reboot your PC.

Now delete the current copy of ComboFix.exe that you have. Then download and save a new version to your Desktop. Download it here: BleepingComputer.com

    It is possible.

Do you have your Windows XP boot CD? Answer this and continue with the below.

Now download Yorkyt.exe Disinfection Tool See the download links under this icon [IMG]
    • Save the file to your hard disk; to your Desktop
    • Double click the yorkyt.exe file to run it (if running Vista or Win 7 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
    • A reboot will be requested to install a driver. Immediately allow it to reboot. You can close anything you have open first.
    • After reboot, you will notice a Panda icon in your tray and the scan will start to run. Do not do anything. Just allow the scan to run.
    • When it finishes, another reboot will be requested complete the disinfection. Allow it to reboot again.
    • When the disinfection is completed, accept the message that will be displayed.
    • The log will be save to your Desktop as yorkyt.exe.log. Attach this log to you next message.

Ok, I downloaded the first file you posted. But, when I right click, there is no "Run as Administrator" option. There is a "Run as..." so I tried that. But then it just attempts to run it under "B. Sites". But it never runs it and says "unable to open the script file".

And I think I have the boot cd. I have the Windows XP disc that came with it.

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Sorry about that. I had posted instructions for a Vista/Win 7 config. I updated/modified the instructions in my last post. Please try to follow them again. If you cannot run them in normal boot mode, then try safe boot mode.

Okay then please find it and see if you can boot from it.

    • Reboot your PC with the Windows XP CD. ( you may need to change your BIOS options to boot from CD before booting from hard disk )
    • When the text-based part of Setup begins, follow the prompts. Select the repair or recover option by pressing R as seen in the below image ( click to expand the thumbnail - note: your CD may not be Windows XP Professional like in this example )

    • After selecting R, you should see a screen like below showing the Recovery Console:

    • Once you are at the Recovery Console, you will be given at least one choice of Windows installations. Normally the choice you want is number 1 . Click the number 1 key at the "top" of the keyboard and click enter.

NOTE: At this point your the numbers to the right of your keyboard are off. If you insist on using these keys for your numbers, remember to hit the Num Lock key before clicking a number over there or your computer will automatically reboot and you will have to work through the previous steps to get back to the recovery console.
    • Now you will be given a message asking for the Administrator password. Depending on whether you ( or someone else ) ever configured this password or not, it may just be blank. So enter your known password or try leaving it blank ( by just hitten the Enter key ) if you are not sure you have one.
    • Now you will have a prompt in the black command prompt window that shows the below:

      X:\WINDOWS>

Note: Where X: is to be replaced with your drive letter which is typically C:
    • If you can get to this point, then enter each of the below purple commands follow by a carriage return. Note there is a space before each c: The exit will cause your PC to reboot. Just let it boot into normal Windows.
    copy c:\windows\System32\DLLCACHE\serial.sys c:\windows\system32\DRIVERS\serial.sys

    exit

Did the the above copy command give you a successful 1 file copied message?

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below log:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

Ok, here's the next logs from the last 2 programs you suggest, and the MGLOGS. I did boot from the CD, and copied the file you said, and it did say the file was copied. Everything seems to be fine still, other than I've noticed in the last day or so that when I put in a cd, it won't autorun.

Well that's great but it is not there. I cannot explain why this file will not get copied and remain thru a reboot. Your logs are not showing any more signs of malware.

You don't want autorun to work anyway as it is a major spreader of malware. It is recommended by most experts to disable this feature anyway to protect you from autoruns type of malware.

Since everything is running okay, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista or Win 7, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
