receiving from comm port

I have a binary signal coming from a microcontroller that I want to read. I attempted to pick up this signal in comm1, but since I have no idea, or really care, what the baud rate is I think I'm working down a blind alley using a comm port. Is there a way that I can just straight receive an external bit pattern without having to do any handshaking? I'm considering going to the LPT1 port but am not sure at this point. It seems that I did something to this years ago under DOS but I can't remember the OLD code I used some 15 years ago.

    Thanks
