Win Xp Showing Strange Fonts

Platform: Windows XP (WinNT 5.01.2600)
MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 (6.00.2600.0000)
NVDIA GEFORCE 4 420 GO Card.

Maybe someone can help or if they have seen anything like this then please enlighten me.

I have recently received a Toshiba Satellite / Win xp that doesnt have SP2 but before I even started to go any further I noticed that the machine would display strange characters instead of the usual fonts when I installed Norton Antivirus 2005.

The characters were almost like chinese alphabets or squiggles and have taken over such buttons as continue, cancel...ok..infact most of the buttons couldnt be read and even when doing a system scan the results were garbled in this strange writings.

Same happened when I installed Ashampoo Optimizer...some parts of the clean up tools became garbled.

I have also noticed the machine has windows xp and also windows Nt...is this possible though at start up it doesnt ask to choose operating system.

Please see if you can help.
