While I already have avg virus protection I tried downloading a free version of norton av 2004. after downloading it I had constant e-mail scanning pop-ups coming up, as if my computer were sending hundreds of e-mails. I can only assume I have some type of spyware or virus that is causing it. I had to uninstall norton because there were so many scanning windows coming up it was filling my entire screen. Each one claiming to be scanning an outgoing e-mail. I have ad-aware se for spyware removal, but it has apparentally not been able to cure this little bugger that is wreacking havoc. I really have no idea what to do here.

    Please follow the steps below:

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps below:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

wow, that took awhile. Ok, i wasn't able to connect to the internet in safe mode so I ran all the spyware and other things i had saved or installed while in safe mode. I had to do the Bitdefender, ranantivirus and stinger scans in normal mode. Bitdefender was the only one that reported anything. I thought I had saved the results, but unfortunatley when I just tried to attatch the file, it was empty. I can say that there were several files found in that scan, but I don't remember what they all were. Most were deleted or disinfected but there were many that couldn't be. I don't appear to be having any problems now, is this something I should still be worried about? I have zone alarm pro installed and it isn't showing any significant upload activity and I don't appear to be having any problems. I am just wondering if I am ok now or if further steps need to be taken to try to cleanse my pc. Anyway, you guys are awesome and I can't believe this is free. On behalf of all of us pc morons that don't know what the hell we are doing I salute you!

Please post a HijackThis log as an ATTACHMENT, and I'll take a look at it; to see if there are any issues that need to be addressed.

    Your log is clean.

BTW your system is way out of date and appears to be the original XP. You need to bring your system Up2Date by running Windows Update, Install SP2, and get the remaining post SP2 updates.
