WinXP - "windows installer" continual popup, slow PC

    I would like help in diagnosing the cause of "Windows Installer" appearing repeatedly and for no known reason, and determining why my PC runs as if something is using up significant resources. I saw "Sonic Update Manager" popping up, so I removed every Roxio occurrence/installation; now the Update Manager does not appear, but the Windows Installer continues to appear, and the PC is running slowly.

    I have read related posts for Windows Installer and Sonic Update Manager.

    I have worked through "Read and Run Me First" in sequence, and the log files are attached to this (and second) message.
    1. I read the Forum Rules and Guidelines.
    2. I am runnning ZoneAlarm and Avast only.
    3. I searched Add/Remove programs, and did not find the specified items; removed old versions of Java, and installed Version 6 Update 21; emptied the Recycle bin; updated CCleaner, and ran it.
    4. I set MSConfig on my 32bit PC for normal mode startup.
    5. I searched for known Malware, but did not find any in Add/remove programs.
    6. I disabled disk emulation using Defogger.
    7. I followed the Windows XP cleaning procedure:
    Ran SuperAntiSpyware - log attached
    Ran Malware Bytes - log attached
    Ran ComboFix - log attached
    Ran RootRepeal - log attached
    Ran MGTools - will attach log to next message.

    I am still having slow-response computer problem; I have not seen the Windows Installer appear in the last 10 minutes.

    Thanks for your help!

    Did you disable automatic updates yourself?

    If you did not deliberately set this proxy yourself then please include it in the HJT fix below:

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

    Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    DirLook::
    c:\documents and settings\ron\Application Data\BC95B571D294CAFFF94F028B373FD7BC
    Registry::
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run-]
    "updateMgr"=-
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run-]
    "HPBootOp"=-
    "HP Software Update"=-
    "MSConfig"=-
    "PCDrProfiler"=-
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{AF69DE43-7D58-4638-B6FA-CE66B5AD205D}]

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      [IMG]

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Also delete all files in the below bold folder except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).

    Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

    Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    Let me know how things are running. Combofix dealt with infected files and replaced them so things should be okay now.

    Don't forget to answer my question regarding the auto updates.

    1. Yes, I disabled Windows automatic updates.

    2. Ran MGTools.exe; selected the listed items.

    3. Ran ComboFix without dropping in selected text.
    Reran ComboFix with selected text. Each time the PC rebooted (and my firewall reinitialized), and on each occasion, after ComboFix restarted, there was a request for Internet access by "pev.cxxe" Each time I denied the request.
    On the second run, ComboFix noted winlogon.exe was infected. CF also noted explorer.exe was infected, and was able to correct this file.
    both runs of CF are attached.

    4. Deleted all temp files possible.

    5. Ran CCleaner

    6. Ran MGTools GetLog.bat file; zip file attached.

    Have not seen "windows installer" popup; PC seems faster now (but the warning about winlogon.exe" is troubling.)

    Thanks for your assistance so far; what do you recommend now?

    Do you have your operating disk handy?

    This infection is turning out to be a right pain! :( Because of this, and not wanting to make any mistakes in my mission to help you, I am going to point Chaslang at this thread and let him see what he thinks. We have been replacing the files from recovery console, with the OS CD but at the moment, all combofix reported was an infected winlogon.exe. We don't know what ELSE is infected also, not to mention all the connected registry entries.

    Let's sit tight a while and see what Chas says.

    I don't have an OS CD per se; when I purchased this HP/Compaq new, the "recovery disk" was a directory on the hard drive which I was unable to extract.

    I will contact HP to see if I can get a recovery CD.

    Download and save this XPsp2bu.exe to your C:\ root folder. You must do this properly. Now run the XPsp2bu.exe program by double clicking on it. You may or may not notice a quick flash of a black window. This is normal. The program runs quickly and just extracts some files we need.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    downloaded XPsp2bu.exe to c:\, ran the program, and did notice a very brief flash.
    Ran C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat; C:\MGlogs.zip is attached

    apologize for slow response; thanks again for your diligence.

    disabled Avast and ZoneAlarm.
    Ran C:\MGtools\analyse.exe; selected text string as described; selected "Fix" and let HJT complete running.

    Created cf.txt from the selected text; dropped cf.txt onto ComboFix icon on desktop; ComboFix ran, requested update, which I permitted.
    ComboFix continued, then stopped with an error message titled:
    "CFScript Name Error" with the text
    "Were you trying to run CFScript?
    The Name, CFScript appears to be incorrectly spelt"

    ComboFix displayed only an "OK" box at that point; when I clicked OK,
    the blue box displaying ComboFix activities closed.
    I restarted Avast and Zone Alarm again.

    You need to run the CF script again, in normal mode if possible or in safe mode if need be. Then...

  12. esco

    Apologize for not completing the last part of the instructions.

    Results were interesting.
    Ran CF in safe mode three times, but saw same results -
    ComboFix stopped with an error message titled:
    "CFScript Name Error" with the text
    "Were you trying to run CFScript?
    The Name, CFScript appears to be incorrectly spelt"

    Rebooted into safe mode with command prompt, and saw two things:
    1. Avast was still running in background. I could not find a listing for it in Task Manager, and when I went to Services, each piece was not running.
    2. I was unable to display my desktop, so I could not see where Avast was running, nor could I drag cfscript.txt onto ComboFix on my desktop. I ran CF _without_ the cfscript.txt file; winlogon.exe is still infected.
    Ran C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat; new C:\MGlogs.zip is attached.

    I uninstalled Avast, then tried dropping cfscript.txt onto CF icon in both normal mode and safe mode with networking, and saw earlier results, i.e. "CFSCript name error."

    Is there a way to boot to safe mode with command prompt, and see the desktop, so I can try this again?

    or is there a way to insert the "KILLALL" instructions into CF from the desktop?

    KILLALL::

    Fcopy::
    C:\MGtools\temp\winlogon.exemg | c:\windows\system32\winlogon.exe
    Folder::
    c:\documents and settings\ron\Application Data\BC95B571D294CAFFF94F028B373FD7BC

    1. Restart your computer.
    2. When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
    3. At this menu, select the option for Safe Mode with Command Prompt using the arrow keys and then press Enter key on your keyboard.
    4. Perform whatever tasks you require and when you are done restart your computer into normal mode.

    Let me know how you get on, I don't know what's happening with combofix saying there's incorrect spelling, I have had that occur three times now this morning, one with your thread, and two others.

    Apologize (again), I slowed this down with an error.

    I misnamed the ComboFix script file as "cf.txt" rather than what you specified in your instructions ("CFScript.txt")
    When I found my error, and renamed the file, ComboFix ran correctly and completely, and "...winlogon.exe was found and disinfected ..."

    Ran C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat; newest C:\MGlogs.zip is attached

    I have noticed my PC is booting faster; does this mean I'm clear of the infection/malware?

    thx,

    Looking great now!

    Okay, just to cover everything, let's have you run an ESET scan now, and see if it turns up anything else that could be wrong, which I do doubt now.

    Now run this:
    Using ESET's Online Scanner

    Downloaded and ran ESET; it appears to have cleared everything remaining

    ESETScan.txt attached.

    Okay that found more Bamital, so... please run ESET twice more and attach logs.

    Then...
    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

    From my read of the ESET results, there isn't anything detected.

    On each of the two ESET runs, nothing was found, so there was no log per se. I did a screen pac (atttached) of the final display after the second run; have also attached results of GetLogs.bat

    Pardon me, you are correct about ESET, I flashed through earlier and what ESET found was the infected files which combofix had in it's quarantine after I had it fix it. Reviewing your logs now...

    OK then, onto final steps!

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
      related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
