Stolen Laptop Recovered - Key Logger ?

I am new to the forum and was advised to post this here.

My new laptop had been stolen and was recently recovered from the house of a couple of computer whiz's. I am very concerned that it might have key logging software installed - am advised that since it was in their custody it might be very difficult to detect anything since it is technically not malware.

What do I do (on my own) to ensure it is key logging free. One of the members has suggested reinstalling windows as the ultimate fix. Given the laptop is new and I have the recovery cd and limited data on the laptop and willing to do it.

Please advice what is the best solution confused

Thanks, I will do the reinstall. Once the renistall is done - is there still a chance for any malware to be there ?
