My neighbor's computer cannot access the internet.
Whenever we try to direct to msn.com (or anything else) we are redirected to http://browsersafeguard.com/Secure/Error?URL=http://www.msn.com/&ResponseCode=502

The following screen message is displayed
[BrowserSafeguard] DNS Lookup for "browsersafeguard.com" failed. The requested name is valid, but no data of the requested type was found

The system is Windows 7 64 bit

We tried a system restore to 9/9 but it did not solve the issue. The restore window stated that the restore did not complete. The system was unable to extract a .dll file.

The failure happens repeatedly. In one instance I was able to get to your website on her laptop and downloaded CCleaner. We ran it and deleted about 280MB of junk.

However the failure continues.

Is this a virus?

 

I searched your site and found someone else who referred to the browsersafeguard issue by mpetro1 on 9/2/13. Evidently this is not a virus.

I will ask my neighbor about the "proxy" question and see if she knows anything about it.

The short answer to your question is NO; browser safeguard was not knowingly installed.
Part of the problem was that I had not reconnected her computer to the wireless router. That was why I kept getting the DNS lookup failure. Once I reconnected to the router I was able to access internet sites without a problem.
She did not know where the browser safeguard came from. I was not able to clearly explain about the "proxy server" and "configuring the browser to 'scan' stuff". She asked me if this was a good thing. I told her it sounded like a good thing but I did not know anything about it.
Right now the computer is able to access the sites that she needs and she is using it for schoolwork. It seems to be working properly after the CCleaner scan.
If time permits, I will try to go through the Read and Run Me First process at a later date. I'm not very familiar with the workings of Windows 7. It seems less user friendly, but perhaps that is because I'm used to Windows XP.
