if i were to get a new hard drive and swap it with my current one, could i use this program so that i would not have to reinstall windows or any other programs, or loose any files?

i assume it would backup to DVD correct? and how would it then work would the computer boot from the dvd?

You don't want a backup program; you want a program that will clone everything on your old hard drive to the new hard drive.

Backup programs are set to restore only to the same hard drive that was backed up not to a different hard drive.

If this is an internal hard drive for a desktop computer, some hard drives come with cloning software.
    Western Digital

uses something calle Data LifeGuard Tools that can be downloaded for your OS and model of hard drive.
    Seagate and Maxtor use MaxBlast

XP can use DriveImageXML; it's free

For a paid program, I would recommend True Image (it has to be an earlier version) or Migrate Easy
    http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/migrateeasy/

    Here are some other programs:
    EZMigration
    http://www.arcoide.com/instant_migration.php
Norton Ghost 10 (I've had problems with Ghost in the past and since Symantec now owns this, I'm not using it).

Advice: google any of these to get a feel if the program is good or bad. Some are easier to use than others and googling will also sort that out.
I have never cloned a hard drive. I've only created images and restored them on several computers so my vote for Acronis was based on the excellent product, True Image and not the software I linked you to.

Earlier versions of True Image allowed cloning as well as backing up. I have version 8 and it allows Disk Clone.
You might be able to get this cheap because it is an older version. Earlier this year it was free from a UK computer magazine site.

sorrry i know this is old but im a bit scared TBH ciz im not sure what im doing

i was playing around with a trial ver of acronis true image,

see this is what i want to happen, i got a 320 gig hdd, it doesnt have much on it cuz most things are on my ext 750 gig, for xmas im getting a new processor and a new internal hdd, what i want to do is, do a backup and have it be burnt toa dvd of the OS, all installed software/settings and documents

then when i have the new parts in, i have the PC boot from the dvd and it re-puts everything where it should be

is there a program that does all that?
