Hello, I am working on an old Dimension 2400, windows XP. I think I accidentally checked the Hide modes that this monitor cannot display while trying to change the display mode. Now the windows logon screen appears but then the screen goes blank. I cannot boot in safe mode to try to correct. Hardware diagnostics all run OK but then get the blue screen with the errors C000021a and Oxc0000034.

Ctrl F11 does nothing, it just brings up the windows logon and then goes blank. Is there any way to get in to change the display mode back to original? I've asked Dell for a recovery Cd but am not holding my breath since this is a 2004 machine.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

What happens when you press F8 at start up?

Thank you for responding. The advanced menu comes up, no matter which option I choose it lists files then gives the blue screen stating system session manager initialization stopped with error codes c000021A and system shuts down then erro code oxc0000034 and just stays on that screen.

Did this happen immediately after changing the resolution? Nothing else changed? Those errors point to a problem with the login process. And I haven't been able to find a definitive solution.

Yes, the screen went blank right away. Can't seem to get into anything beyond F2 or F8. I I did get a response from Dell about my request for a repair disk. They said they would send one. This is my aunt's computer and she is looking around for any installation disks that may have come with the computer but that was 5 years ago! Thank you for trying to help. I appreciate it very much. Needless to say I won't be mucking around with those settings if I ever get it back.

I'm sorry I am at a loss. Changing the resolution to something your monitor can't display shouldn't give that error. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;156669
My father has a Dell 2400 and it came with an XP installation disk and a Driver disk but I am unsure how you would fix the problem using either disc other than reinstalling. I'll look around again later but I can't find a link between changing resolution and that error.

I did the same thing you did once. I unchecked hide modes that this monitor can not display. I stared at a lovely black screen and ended up reinstalling windows. Fortunately, I did not lose much.

My notes indicate that F8 then selecting safe mode, allows me to fix it. In safe mode, the computer doesn't load any video drivers. So you right click the desktop, choose properties and reset the video display so that it hides modes that the card or onboard chip can't display.

What are your choices when you press F8 because I'm not clear exactly what the advanced menu choices are?

    Try the following ...
Start tapping the F8 key after you press the ON button, and continue tapping until you are presented with the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" screen. Use the UP/DOWN arrow keys to select "Last known good configuration that worked", and press the Enter key. The computer will attempt to load Windows.

If Windows does not start, try the same thing again .... and continue trying for at least 10 times, before you rule that option out as a means of getting your OS up and running again, normally.

Why 10 times? Based on past experience, a successful result is sometimes achieved after several consecutive failed attempts.
