I'm using a friend's computer for a bit and am having issues with redirects, frequent ads popping up, multiple tabs opening when I click on a box on a site to input information. I went through and deleted/uninstalled the obvious programs, which helped, but went through the malware removal guide to look for anything hidden. Here they are attached. Full disclosure: I REALLY screwed up the Hitman Pro scan. Yes, I know it says not to delete the files it quarantined and identified as malware, but my screen didn't look like the screenshot provided in the instructions on this site. I thought it would be on the next page so I clicked "next", which of course went ahead and deleted those files. I recognize this may mean I may be denied help with this. I am so sorry.

Also, I ran into problems getting Malwarebytes to install and run correctly. As suggested, I changed the name of the exe file to mb.exe. After install the program opened but then this message popped up: "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware has stopped working. A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." It closes and when I try again to update it or start the scan I get the same message and the program closes. I was instructed to skip this one an go on with the remaining steps.

Here are all the logs I could get.

Please provide the log from Hitman Pro. We need this to continue with complete instructions.

But in the meantime, also do the below.

    Uninstall Muvic Smartbar

Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT may reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting if this happens.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.

I just downloaded JRT and started the scan when the following message appeared: "A bad module has been detected! A reboot is required to remove modules. Press 'y' to reboot now. Press 'n' to reboot later. Reboot now? [y,n]".

    What should I do?

    You need to reboot.

Don't forget to send me the Hitman log and also the log from JRT.

Attached are the JRT and Hitman logs. Of interest, when I rebooted JRT, Hitman automatically started scanning upon reboot and created another log. The first log won't attach as it is too large for the forum limits. Also, I am unable to uninstall Muvic Smartbar using the traditional unistall add/remove programs method. Thanks so much for your help!

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win 7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large [IMG] button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

I'm confused...I think I'm missing something. I ran MGtools.exe but couldn't figure what you meant by "select the following line"... Then I realized that you are asking me to run MGtools\analyze.exe. I searched but can't find it. Where can I find MGtools\analyze.exe to download and then run?

  8. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

    It is C:\MGtools\analyse.exe.
    • C: is the disk drive letter
    • \ means is the base level folder ( thus the root level of drive C: )
    • MGtools is the name of the folder at the root level of drive C
    • analyse.exe is the filename of a program that I want you to run and it is in the MGtools folder. ;)
If you hold down the Windows logo key and at the same time press the e key, Windows Explorer will open up. In Windows Explorer you can navigate to the C:\MGtools folder ( not the MGtools.exe file ) and you can double click the C:\MGtools folder to open it in Windows Explorer. This will show all the files and folders that are inside the C:\MGtools folder. You will see they analyse.exe file in the list. If you only see analyse instead of analyse.exe that would be because you do not have viewing of file extenstions enabled. Either way analyse or analyse.exe is what you want to run per my instructions.

Thanks for spoon feeding me/holding my hand through the folder issue. God knows I needed it...

Attached are the logs requested. Some of the lines I was instructed to check were not found after running HJT. The ones that were found were fixed. I take it the original Hitman Pro log that was too large to attach wasn't needed?

Things seem to be running better now. I'm not getting the pop ups or redirects and clicking on things like Google search boxes no longer opens up numerous tabs or windows.

Edited to add, I still can't delete Muvic Smartbar and Malware Bytes still won't run.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Uninstall it. Then reboot. Then try reinstalling it. If it still does not run you need to describe exactly what happens when you try to run it.

    1. Text was successfully added to the registry.

    2. I uninstalled Malwarebytes and then reinstalled it. I changed the name of the exe file to mb.exe. After install the program opened but then this message popped up: "Malwarebytes Anti-Malware has stopped working. A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." It closes and when I try again to update it or start the scan I get the same message and the program closes.

I know we are not supposed to bump threads, but it has been over two weeks and I'm thinking this one got lost. If I am incorrect, I apologize.

Malwarebytes still won't run correctly, which makes me think some malware is installed and preventing it from running. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  14. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

Nope! I apologize. This is my fault for missing your post.

Okay this is not a malware problem but rather a problem within Windows ( posibly in the registry ) or possibly a software conflict with some other application. You would be better off posting at the Malwarebytes forum unless you are comfortable with modifying the Windows Registry. It could require a complete unintall again and then a cleanup of any registry entries for Malwarebytes followed by a reboot before reinstalling. Revo Uninstaller can sometimes be used in an agressive type mode to cleanup misc things that normal uninstalls miss but there still could be just one item left hanging around that could cause the problem you are having.

Also you can try this where they use mbam-clean https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?/topic/48221-malwarebytes-anti-malware-has-stopped-working/

Renaming the installer to mb.exe is only necessary for malware problems and what you are experiencing is not a malware problem.

    Thanks, chaslang.

So the logs show no malware then? Should I do the final steps and cleanup and address the Malwarebytes issue after? Thanks for your help.

  16. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

You're welcome. Yes complete the below and then deal with MBAM.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others) and running MGclean.bat did not remove them, you can delete these files now.
    7. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    8. If you are running Win 8, Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below to flush restore points:
      • Refer to the instructions for your WIndows version in this link: Disable And Enable System Restore
      • What we want you to do is to first disable System Restore to flush restore points some of which could be infected.
      • Then we want you to Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
