My parents computer has become infected with the ZeroAccess Rootkit. I've read through a number of posts on this site and others, I've run ComboFix several times and it continues to indicate that the computer is infected. In addition, now IE will not connect to web sites. This is beyond what I can normally take care of on my own. Can someone help me get this resolved. I will follow all the instructions you provide. I can download from another computer and put on my flash drive since I can't currently access the internet from the damaged computer.

    Thanks

I've completed both steps. This reply has the first 4 attachments. The second reply with have the remaining 3 attachments.

This is the second reply with the remaining 3 logs. I still do not have access via Browser but it appears as though it does have internet connectivity. ComboFix still says I have the ZeroAccess rootkit.

FYI...as part of the cleanup, I removed my Symantec AV and Java, as well as old versions of Adobe PDF, etc. I will install new AV once the system is cleaned. Probably eSet.

    [IMG] Fixing items using ComboFix
Make sure that ComboFix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your desktop -- but do not run it.
If it is not on your desktop, the below will not work.
Shut down your protection software now (antivirus, antispyware...etc) to avoid possible conflicts.
Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into Notepad:

Save this file as CFScript.txt to your desktop. So now you should have both CFScript.txt and ComboFix.exe on your desktop.
Now use your mouse to drag CFScript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe and then release.
    This will launch ComboFix.
Note: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Allow ComboFix to update itself if prompted.
When ComboFix finishes, a log will be produced at C:\ComboFix.txt
Attach this log to your next message. (How to attach)

    Open the Device Manager

Click the [IMG] button. > Run - copy and paste this command in the box devmgmt.msc then click OK.

    Collapse the Network Adapters list.
Right mouse click: Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller
    Choose "Uninstall".
You be asked to confirm your actions, choose OK and let it uninstall.
If it asks you if you want to delete the driver software / files too, say No.
When you have done this and Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller is no longer in the Device Manager list -- Press the Scan for hardware changes button ([IMG]) or Action -> Scan for hardware changes
Allow it to reinstall your network adapter.
    Reboot for changes to occur.
Test internet once you have rebooted.

I've followed the instructions in the last reply. Attached are the log files. I still cannot access the internet. Also, when running ComboBox, the following error message appeared: [OpenEvent] Failed to perform desired action. Error Code: 2. I clicked ok and ComboFix continued.

The error was from MalwareBytes. Also, I did delete the TDSS File System entry in TDSSKiller.

Had an issue installing SP3. I received an Access Denied error and SP3 rolled back. Rebooted and tried again with the same error. Found this link on the Microsoft site http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377. I downloaded subinacl.msi, executed it, then executed the script found on that page. I then attempted to reinstall SP3 and it completed successfully. After rebooting, I am able to connect to the internet.

Let me know if there are more scans to run to make sure everything is fixed.

    Thanks for you help.

Your latest logs were clean of malware. Just needed to fix the residual OS damage which it seems like you got sorted out ;)

Are you having any other malware problems? I do not think any additional scans are necessary at this point. So let me know how the system is running.

Everything seems to be working correctly. I have installed AV and updated Malwarebytes so should be good to go. Thank you very much for your assistance. It is greatly appreciated.

    You're welcome.

I would recommend disabling your antivirus before completing these final cleanup steps.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis if it present
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work through the below link:
    Be safe :)
