Been working with esupport on making a MajorGeeks.com software updater program. Almost ready for release. If you want a preview, dig it here.

    Greetings, CP...

Just fired it up - clean looking interface, pretty quick with both driver and software scans on an intentionally outdated Win 7 64-bit machine. It's getting late here, so I'll do a couple of actual updates tomorrow (probably).

All in all, looks pretty sweet...

I think it looks great and it will be a great convenience utility for the web site.

I ran it on my Windows XP SP3 machine.

It flagged some software as needing an update which is already up to date.
Some show the wrong version numbers.

    Example:
Speccy latest version shows as 1.17.340 which is the version currently installed; latest version is actually 1.19.411

MiniTool Partition Wizard latest version shows as 7.6 which is the version currently installed; does Not need updating
Revo Uninstaller latest version shows as 1.94 which is the version currently installed; does Not need updating
MyDefrag latest version shows as 4.3.1 which is the version currently installed; does Not need updating
Sophos Anti-Rootkit latest version shows as 1.5.4 which is the version currently installed; does Not need updating
HD Tune latest version shows as 2.55 which is the version currently installed; does Not need updating

Total Uninstall latest version shows as 6.2.1; latest version is actually 6.2.2

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 shows as needing an update but all of the security patches for 1.1 have been installed.

ALL of the download links that I checked were OK.

    Ran fine on a Win7 X86 machine.
Few odd things, look at Teracopy, it's showing 2.27 is installed but is asking to update it to 2.27. Another is Device remover, it was legitimately out of date so I updated it from MG's it still flagged it so I went to the developers site and it contained V0.9.4727.42780 newer yet so I updated from there. It still is flagging it, seems it looks for the version to be equal to what is listed here at MG's (which I would assume a Major Geeks updater would do) even if there is a newer version out in the wild. Not a bug actually other than maybe make it not flag something if a version number is greater than it's looking for. For some reason it didn't do this with Skype and Checkdisk which I have a newer version than what it lists as the latest. All in all a nice piece of code.

Odd that it finds updates like my HP printer which had no updates when I had it phone home.:(

The device drivers is esupport - they do drivers, we do software. Joint venture kinda thing.

Cool looks folks, I'll look into the bugs. Getting the version numbers dialed in for everything is sometimes more art than science. ;)

    Hi All,

So that we can resolve your problems quickly, can you please include the short "ScanID" number in your post. You will find this at the bottom of the Devices tab once you have your results.

    Had a couple of oddities.

Clicked on link to update Windows Live which took me to the MG page that in turn persisted in downloading the same version as already installed. Went to MS website and downloaded later version from there via web download.

Skype has some odd characters after its name.

Driver page listed drivers that were uptodate but still had a download link for an update? see Realtek NIC driver. Updated the graphics driver from AMD and on rescan (ScanID: K1F3C401) also showed similar contradiction.

Google's VirusTotal scanner ( https://www.virustotal.com/ ) reveals that of 46 popular antivirus products, only Comodo has a problem with it.

As you may know, the scanner program also does a quick check of your hardware to see if there are any drivers that are out of date. To be able to provide you with the correct driver, we need to accurately identify your hardware. There are several classes of device where it's not possible to rely on information provided by Windows, and we need to talk directly to the hardware itself. To do this, a device driver is installed. Several antivirus products take this to be suspicious activity.

    Greetings, Phil...

It's long been my belief that usually OEMs provide device driver updates to address specific problems, and that if your equipment is not exhibiting any symptoms of those problems then it's best to leave well enough alone. Since you're a provider of a system-wide driver update software I'm interested in hearing your opinion about that subject.

By the way: you've got a good-looking program going there - keep up the good work.

Overall, what you have said is correct. However, all manufacturers arrive at a point where they no longer update drivers for products they have sold.

With very few exceptions (notably Laptop Graphics), the manufacturers do very little with the drivers they receive from their Chipset suppliers - most do not have the staff or the skills to write or modify driver software.

It is worthwhile updating drivers if you have a problem with your current one, or are looking for a feature that has been introduced in a later version.

I have been testing this since Jim mentioned this too me and I have found the app to be quick and accurate on my Windows 8 boxes.

I would always advocate using a updater app for those less tech savvy as it will keep them up to date on their PC.

At this point it is trying to open your default web browser to view the results of the scan.

It will fail if you don't have a default web browser, or if you don't have a program to handle .html files... This is likely to occur if you installed a new web browser, then uninstalled it.

Just tested it on our Win8 machine, and all worked as expected.

Firefox was default but when I checked Windows panel to set defaults it showed Windows media player as default for HTML files when I looked under Firefox. WOuld not allow me to change them to Firefox. Windows MP entry did not list HTML files. Shortcuts were opening normally in Firefox. Googling lead me to the Shell settings for Firexfox in registry ([HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\FirefoxHTML\shell\play]) found a couple references to Media Player, deleted them now it runs fine...Thanks.

Comodo has updated their virus definitions. There is no longer a false positive detected in the application. :)

If anyone is still receiving a false positive in Software Updater with Comodo, updating your virus definitions to the latest version will correct this.

    Hi,
first of all I want to thank you for realizing this tool. :drool

Unfortunately I'm too dumb to interpret the results :confused
    Two examples:
1.) I've got Eusing Free Registry Cleaner installed (vers. 3.00) but the double arrow download symbol appears bold and the updater tells me: "Latest version: 3.00". Same Symptom for Eusing Cleaner (2.8).
2.) Wise Registry Cleaner. Installed: 7.61.493. Latest version according to updater: 7.55. Download symbol appears bold.

Should I remove programs with an uninstaller like Revo or Advanced Uninstaller before installing a new version, because there might stay remnants of earlier versions in the registry? Or doesn't your program use the latest database of Majorgeeks?

    Thanks again,
    Peter

Tried out beta2 on my laptop w/ Win 7 Home Premium, pretty nice. Reasonably fast once I remembered to allow it in NoScript. :D It showed download arrows for Avira Free, though the latest version number shown matches what I have.

It doesn't cover Java? Why not?

I really doubt that 14 of 29 device drivers are out of date; only had this thing a couple months and I updated all the drivers since then. It's a refurb Thinkpad T400, and there are drivers from either Lenovo or MS - the information I have is the MS drivers are more up-to-date. I don't know which the program is pointing me to. Not planning to spend the $25.00 for auto-download of the drivers anyway, but especially not in light of that issue. ScanID: KD2F96DB

Thanks for pointing out the problem with Avira. That issue has been located and fixed.

We'll look into your Java question. However, with the latest Homeland Security warnings ( http://www.zdnet.com/homeland-security-warns-java-still-poses-risks-after-security-fix-7000009785/ ) , it is well worth removing this software completely from your machine.

Looking at your scan results, the figure 14 of 29 is accurate, and here are just a few reasons why:

    * Your Conexant 20561 SmartAudio HD driver is version 4.92.10.0 .. the latest from Lenovo is a few months newer and is version 4.92.12.0
    * Your USB drivers are dated from 2006/06/21 .. the newest from Intel are 6 years newer - 2012/10/05

Our software cannot tell your personal situation. It does not know if you *need* to install these drivers - it is letting you know that there are newer drivers available. It is up to you to decide if they should be installed.

Thanks for the quick response. Yes, the Avira issue seems fixed; it's now shown as up-to-date.

However, Wise Disk Cleaner and Wise Registry Cleaner - which I had just updated minutes before running a new scan - were still shown as out-of-date. Tried again after a restart, no change.

Good point about Java, it has frequent security problems. There was an update available, however, patched about 50 vulnerabilities; for those users who haven't taken the advice to remove Java, it should be covered. I keep it active only because I can block applets (I use NoScript, but Firefox now does this without add-ons) and my system is well hardened.

Ran Intel's Driver Update Utility - it found only a graphics driver, which I installed. I likely will update the audio driver as well (looked into it, it might reduce memory use). As for the rest, since I'm not having problems and the Intel utility doesn't say I need the updates, I think I'll leave well enough alone. Good to know about them, but they probably fix problems from a version I don't have.

I noticed that it did not detect the correct CPU in my case, it detected i3 cpu whereas I in fact have the i5 CPU. Not sure if it matters but just in case it is I am using the Ultrabook from Samsung model NP530U4C-A01US.

Good utility but again I would not like to pay $25 to update my drivers, I am on top of things myself and it does not take much time to do that as the laptop is provided with software and driver updater from Samsung.

WinImage Version 8.10 is showing as being the latest available. But I already have Version 8.50 which is the actual latest. So it's not only has the wrong latest but isn't detecting 8.50 as being later than 8.10.

Also showing my Version of Winzip as 15.5 which is correct and showing Latest Version as 17.0 Build 10381 but is showing a tick instead of a download symbol.

AviSynth 2.5. Have installed latest Version 2.5.8.7 from Majorgeeks link but stiull shows up as needing update.

I have just joined this forum and downloaded the MG Software Updater (v2.2013.1.31) and have the following comments so far, if anyone is interested as there does not appear to be much traffic about this MG product as yet.

It reported that pdf995 is out of date and needs to be updated to version 12.1.
However, I have 12.2 installed and this is the same version that is downloaded whichever link I click on the MG download page despite it being described as 12.1.

It is reporting that Foxit Reader is now at version 5.4.5.01242, replacing 5.4.5.0124 which is not what the Foxit site says. I have queried this with Foxit and am awaiting a response.

It is reporting my version of Microsoft Money is out of date, but it is not detecting my location, UK, and so incorrectly reports this as my installed version is the last version issued for the UK. Perhaps this needs some development work to implement location specific checking.

The tool reports that are 5 out of date application on my PC that need updating, but only details 4 that are actually installed, the 5th is a recommendation to install a new product 'Tweaking.com - Windows Repair 1.9.13', which is all very interesting but not what an Update Checker should be doing by including it in the total count of 'out of date' software.

I have not investigated the accuracy of the Driver section yet, and will provide a report/comments later.

So, all in all, the MG SOftware Updater appears to still be a work in progress and I hope it will be enhanced/improved in the very near future to enable MG to continue to provide its fantastic service to the community.

Often when a driver is installed you have the ability to choose from a list of Descriptions or Device Names that you want to Windows to display in the Device Manager. Each of the devices utilitize the same driver so essentially the description is just a formality.

One could add their own description to the appropriate section of the INF file prior to installing the driver to have their own custom description such as:

    "Jim's Video Card"

    or

    "One Awesome Video Card"

The same applies to the processor. Whatever description was selected at the time of the driver installation is what is displayed in Device Manager and by MajorGeeks Software Updater.

Hopes this helps to relieve some confusion.

It all depends on how you determined your HP was "fully updated" Checking for updates from the Device Manager is not the best way to do it... The Microsoft Update database is fairly small, and does not contain the latest drivers for all products.

The printer driver you have installed is version 6.64.0.994 (2011.08.29), the version we are recommending is 9.84.00.1189 (2012.09.06), over a year newer.

The chipset drivers we are recommending are 2 1/2 years newer than what is installed.

The first 3 have the same download link:
ATI Radeon HD 4350 will become ASUS Seymour Graphics Driver
ATI High Definition Audio Device will become ASUS Seymour Graphics Driver
AMD PCI Express (3GIO) Filter Driver will become ASUS Seymour Graphics Driver

Should all 3 different drivers become the same driver?

Qualcomm Atheros 802.11 a/b/g/n Dualband Wireless Network Module will become Qualcomm Atheros AR5006X Wireless Network Adapter Driver
USB Mass Storage Device will become Alcor Card Reader Driver version 1.0.36.97

I just want to be sure before I make any changes.

Hi Smoke_screen_uk, welcome to the forum first and foremost and thank you for your question.

I did a quick test of the download with a reputable online multi-malware scanner Jotti and found the below results,

    http://virusscan.jotti.org/en/scanresult/d51a0b578a9126a1f714e95f604cabdf02fc13eb

Which has me thinking this is a false positive, in the vain of being a software scanner for the versions of software you have installed, looking for updates to those softwares, then being a downloader application too may trigger a false positive.

I know that the owners of Majorgeeks, strive to make sure all listed downloads are malware free and have done so for longer than many other download sites.

    Hi David,

Thanks for the link to jotti.org - it appears that Dr.Web have created an entry just for us. http://www.drwebhk.com/en/virus_techinfo/Trojan.Proxy.26263.html

It is a suspicious file only because it installs a Device Driver ("<DRIVERS>\DrvAgent32.sys"). This is not the usual behavior of a software program: Our program also checks the software for installed hardware (eg the Catalyst software for ATI graphics cards). We use the Device Driver to talk to your hardware directly, to get as much technical information as possible from it. More than what is normally stored in the Registry.

    Hi Phil

Cheers for the update and I agree with you in some applications will trigger a malware application into thinking said app is rogue, when it is not.

I do trust the Majorgeeks updater app and have no issues with it as I know Tim and Jim would not have actioned its usage if not.

There are updater apps for software and drivers, I trust a lot of the software updaters like Majorgeeks and Secunia but I would never touch a "driver" updater app with a bargepole as they are not accurate enough, the original makers site is best for drivers.
