I downloaded a supposedly free malware removal program from the front page of majorgeeks.com calling itself ReImage Repair. The program supposedly scanned the pc for about 3-5 minutes and then showed a huge list of registry errors and viruses. At the bottom of the list was a button which said something like 'click here for repair'. I clicked the button and was taken to a website which asked for money for a license. In other the words the program did NOTHING but open a selling page on the internet. Aren't all the programs hosted by Major Geeks checked for authenticity and freely operational or at least trial software? I'll have to remove it now.

I wasn't able to edit my post, so I'll have to add this new information here.

You can't even remove this supposed Malware Program as there is no entry in the Remove Programs part of the control panel. Also I came across some CNN reviews where even though people paid money for the license they were ripped off as they claimed the program still did nothing. And the company claim of one hundred percent refund if not satisfied was never honoured.

I hope Major Geeks is going to remove this program download from the front page of its site.

Sorry to keep posting new posts, but I can't edit the original post or the reply I made to it.

The download wasn't on the front page of Major Geeks only the link to the download page was on the front page. Here is the download page for Reimage Repair hosted by Major Geek. http://www.reimageplus.com/lp/major...adgroup=direct&ads_name=direct&keyword=direct

When I googled this program I'm finding more and more claims that this software is not only a scam but a potential virus if not completely removed.
PLEASE REMOVE THIS PROGRAM FROM MAJOR GEEKS.
    Thanks!

Here is a link to a site which outlines the dangers this software poses, describes it as scamware at best and a virus at worst and describes how to rid the system of it.
    http://botcrawl.com/how-to-remove-the-reimage-virus-and-uninstall-reimage-pc-repair/

Here is what the site says about ReImage Repair:

'Reimage (Reimageplus), often referred to as the Reimage PC Repair virus, Reimage Repair virus, Reimageplus virus, or simply the Reimage virus, is malware categorized as Scareware (Reimage PC Repair, fraudulent PC Repair software), that utilizes unethical tactics and malicious browser attachments, such as the Reimage Smartbar, Reimage Community Smartbar, Reimage Customized Web Search, Reimage Windows Problem Relief PC Repair, and malicious third party browser add-ons, extensions, plug-ins, and Toolbars to infect a computer system and operate a series of attacks, including symptoms of rogue software and browser hijacker malware.'

I'm not sure what exactly the problem is. I actually have the program running right now on this machine that I am typing this post on to monitor quality-- and have had for a couple years. I've never had a problem with it.

The program is meant to repair file, and other damage created by infections. It is rather unique in the way it operates as if say an important .dll is damaged or specifically infected most AV products will either ignore or delete it and that could damage the operating system. reImage can replace that file.

Reimage has never been free and I've never advertised it as free. The do have a free toolbar removal tool. It is what I like to call "scanware" it scans your system and tell you what it can fix. If you want them to fix it, you buy it. I have no problem with that model.

With all due deference to botcrawl - If you want to uninstall reimage, simply go to add remove programs.

As for refund - I 100% know they refund the sales as I see the reports from our end. If you personally would like a refund and are having trouble getting it.. Please email directly at jim @ majorgeeks and I will personally make sure it happens.

Is the program perfect - nope. Is it for everyone - nope. However, I hopefully this helps clear some things up for you.

    Thanks for replying.

I was upset because I thought all the programs you hosted here you could use - at least as trialware to help get rid of malware. But downloading this one was a wasted effort as I'm not in a position right now to pay for a virus remover. Meanwhile, there are virus popping up everywhere, and I'm stuck with this program that I'm reading increasingly bad things about on review sites and self help sites. And even if I was in a position to pay, it's dodgy for a program you know nothing about. Secondly, when I came to remove it, the program was not listing among those programs on the Remove Program page. Then I went to the program folder and found a file which one site would manually the program, but nothing happened.

I've read first hand accounts of many people across several sites who claimed that when they contacted ReImage for a refund - because it repaired nothing - they were only offered tech help. The only way they could get a refund was through PayPal. This doesn't affect me as I didn't give them any money. However, why would you want to host a program that offers nothing unless someone is prepared to pay for it up front - without letting the downloader know beforehand that this is the case. And also host a program that is widely criticised across quite a few sites for not getting any results and the company, itself, not providing a refund when requested? All these people can't be making it up. Do you have any more programs like this on the site? If so, could you put the programs that you have to pay for before you can use them in a separate place so that when we're desperately looking for something in a hurry to get rid of viruses, but can't or don't want to pay for it, we know not to download these programs.

Just a suggestion, but I think it's a thoughtful one.

The ad an page and program make it very clear that you have to buy it to get the repairs. This is not that unusual these days. Why-- because it works.

However, if you are looking for help and want to put in some time go toour mailware forum.
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=35

the people over there can help you remove pretty much anything and they only recommend the freeware versions.

Well, you're right about pricing details being on the download page so apologies for that. http://download.cnet.com/Reimage-Repair/3000-18512_4-10907808.html For some reason I assumed the software hosted by Major Geeks were free so I didn't check very closely.
Under 'Price' it did say the software is 'Free to Try' which is a little misleading as it sounds like trialware if you don't read the following description in brackets where it gives buying details including 'scan only'.

However I hope you can understand the frustration of trying to quickly find something to remove the Win/Geracion (sp?} with warnings popping up by the dozens of new attacks. It was panic stations followed by mega panic when I thought I'd just downloaded more malware when I read the comments of others and then couldn't remove it in the usual way.

    Thanks for your explanations.

Thanks for that link. I'll hang onto it for the next time I'm having problems. AVG cleared up the current attacks.

    Thanks, again.
