    System Info
    Dell Latitude D620
    OS: Windows XP Professional SP3
    CPU: Intel T2300 @ 1.66GHz
    RAM: 1GB

    Complaint
User was informed by their ISP (Comcast) that one of their systems may be infected with a bot. Comcast did not provide any further information. User also complained of system slowness.

    Process
Examining the processes, I didn't see anything that looked out of the ordinary, except it seemed like they had a lot of things installed and running on startup. I uninstalled unwanted/unnecessary software and used Norton Security Suite's startup manager to disable/delay some programs for which I could not find built-in startup options, and that seemed to help some.

However, since the other concern was a bot, and I am not an expert on malware, I decided to run through the procedures here. I installed 7zip prior to this to be able to unzip RARs. As usual, I ran the computer disconnected from the Internet to run scans. SAS found nothing. MBAM's rules installer was dated 8/31/2011 (version 7622), and it found nothing. Used the drag & drop method to install Recovery Console with ComboFix, which deleted a few files and folders; the files seem to be related to Win32/Liften.B. RootRepeal found 1 file, but it seems to be related to Norton Security Suite. MGTools produced its plethora of log files in a zip.

Log files are attached. Just want to make sure that nothing else is plaguing the computer.

MGTools log attached. For future reference, would it be simpler to zip all of the desired log files into one ZIP file and attach that to the first post instead of making two posts? Or is there a reason why we don't do that?

No, we prefer that the attachments are done this way rather than all zipped up in one log.

I am not seeing any malware in those logs. Let's just do this.

I want you to run TDSSKiller so refer to the below for how to do so.

    TDSSkiller - How to run

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.
    • Attach this log to your next message. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

I think they need to provide some more info.

Run this and attach the results.

Should I be concerned about typing in a network key on the machine? I suppose I could just plug it into the router to avoid typing the network key. Will run scan as soon as I can.

ESET Scan log attached as requested. I have also attached the email notice received by the user, with their email address removed.

Well it is of my opinion that this paticular computer is clean. If the owner of this machine has other machines then the R&R needs to be run individually on those too. How many PC's are on their network??

I believe they have two computers. I'll check with them about their other computer.

Yes, would be a good idea. This one looks clean as I said previously.

The user told me that they ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware back in October and that it removed some things. However, when I reviewed those log files, they showed that no malicious items were detected.

I've sent the user an email about what you've said here. I'll have them check on their other computer in due time. If I'm the one examining it, I'll make a new topic regarding that one, unless you feel I should continue with its logs here. Do you think it's safe to log in to the other machine remotely to run scans, or would that be inadvisable?

Unless there's something more that you would like to do, shall we finish the cleanup on this first machine?

Yes, best that you do make a new thread for the other computer. ;)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required (If we renamed it please rename it back to Combofix.exe.
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
