HP Pavilion zd8000 laptop, ATI Radeon X600 mobility video adapter, WinXP MCE
Here's the problem (well, the main problem): the video drivers will not install correctly. I've uninstalled all the ATI software and drivers because it wasn't working correctly. If I tried to go from 640x480 up to 800x600, the screen would go black, and never come back, even tho' there's usually that timer that will revert back to the original settings if you don't click on OK. The timer thing isn't working either. If I boot in safe mode, I can uninstall the video driver and reboot in normal mode OK. The PC will try to re-install the video driver and ends up with "cannot finish installing new hardware. Windows cannot find the file specified". This happens without any input from me, even tho' I've removed the drivers. If I go thru the device manager, and point the wizard to the driver files, it does the same thing, same error message, and doesn't say which file it cannot find. And sometimes the driver has the yellow '!' in the device manager, and sometimes it doesn't. I'm beginning to think this is a hardware problem. There's another problem where the printer (not even attached to the PC) reloads the software at every boot up in normal mode and every time I plug in my USB thumb drive or put in a CD or hook up an external USB drive. But the printer software problem is minor compared to the video problem. Anybody have any life-saving ideas or suggestions???? Thanx in advance!!!!

I guess what I need is a hard core ATI uninstaller. There's bits and pieces of the ATI driver left over that I can't seem to locate and/or remove.... is there an ATI removal tool that removes ALL the files and registry entries and EVERYTHING?

I install and uninstall drivers all the time with no problems..I use crapcleaner and drive cleaner pro. you uninstall your drivers, use ccleaner and reboot boot into safe mode. Use drive cleaner pro (follow instructions and use the ATI not the nvidia setting then reboot and install your video drivers. You might check online for the latest and greatest drivers for your card.

I've already been to HP for all the drivers. That was the first thing I did. Anyway, I'm getting nowhere. I have more details in the Driver forum, I think that's a better place for this thread. Here's the link: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=122686
If anybody can help, please post in the Driver forum from now on! Thanx ;)
