Old mouse is dual optical; does that matter anymore? (Replacement mouse needed)

Several years ago I picked up a Logitech dual optical mouse and've loved using it: the shape and weight as well as its precision have been great for both regular computing and gaming. However, it's starting to fall apart (it seems slower to respond and a couple days ago the "feet" on the bottom started coming off) and so I'm looking to replace it.

My question is, my current mouse's specs list two optical sensors at 800 dpi each. Flipping through a couple computer hardware websites it looks like a lot of mice are single-optical and still 800 dpi... Am I going to be losing pointer precision by going back to a single-op mouse?

Like I mentioned, one of the things I love about this mouse is its shape: it's not exactly centered but kind of wiggles off to the right at its tail end so it contours my hand better. I also like the single thumb button on the side. Can anyone recommend a replacement mouse, whether it be Logitech or otherwise? I spent $30 on this mouse back when I got it and would be looking to spend about the same now.

The best advice i can give would be to goto your local Best Buy and check out the mice there. They generally have mice up for display that you can actually touch and move around to see how you like them. dual optical doesn't really matter anymore, especially with Logitech's new laser mice (yes, Laser, not LED like the dual optical). for corded mice the best one you could probably get is the Logitech G5 (it is made so you can customize the weight according to what you prefer - yes it's a gaming mouse and is more expensive than the 30 - but they're nice!), for LED, i like the 518 mouse (again, gamers mouse - but for quality you cant get too much better), otherwise you might look at the MX1000 mouse - but i'm not sure on cost. When you get to it though, you should just goto to a Comp-USA or Best buy and check them out yourself :) hope this helps!

Thanks for the advice, I'll be sure to take it.

I think I muddied up my original question by launching into the other stuff. I'm really just curious if the dual optical bit matters anymore. But it sounds like you're saying some of the newer ones are lasers now, so the dual LED doesn't matter? That answers the question, if that's the case.

I'm going to go look up the ones you mentioned. Thanks again. :)

Nope, dual optical never hit it big. There are better things now. Logitech has a corded laser mouse too now, IIRC.

The MX 518 has a 1600dpi precision. You can actually set three different dpi settings as well. The nice thing is, its hardware controlled, so no matter your OS, you can change the dpi settings. There are three defaults. I believe they are 400, 800, and 1600.

Don't quote me on that, Im sure it says for sure on their site.

Ooo... I'm looking over their site now and it looks like the 518, regularly $50, has a $10 discount if you buy it online. Does anyone have this mouse, and can comment on it?

Also, I'm not familiar with laser mice so I'm going to do more research on them.

Mmmm, yeah I've been reading reviews and, apart from the +$20 (+$10 with the rebate) price tag, I like what I'm reading. I'm going to try and pop into some stores this week and see if I can find a floor model to try handling in-store and see how it compares to my current mouse.
