how much does it cost to have your engine repaired?
my dad's car broke down because the valveregulatingsystem moved which made the valves time incorrectly which made something else not go like it's supposed to.
the repairtime is one week :p

and no, I did NOT wreck the car, my dad did :p

    >how much does it cost to have your engine repaired?

    Insufficient information.
    What broke?
    OK, valves.
    What happened to the valves?
    sleeves? rocker arms? seats? bearings?
You say 'valve regulating system which makes the valves time incorectly'
Is that one of those newfangled variable valve timing systems?
If so, as far as cost goes....
    BOHICA!!!!

    ouch!!
That is a wide open question, most good shops get a minimum of $40 an hour, but when they say a week shop time that usually means how long they need the car. You want to make sure that job is done right and by a reputible shop.
    good luck :)

But doesn't the fast back mustang have a rear gas tank and if you get rear ended it explodes and you will be a crispy critter?

Flep I would do some searching of any forums that deal with they car you dad has.

One of those monsters would go down a treat in Holland, just think of how many cyclists you would scare to death ;)

    piston broke ;)

Anyone else have that problem??? :p

fleppen more info would help, but it sounds like timing chain or belt, depending on type of vehicle. Some vehicles have what's called an interference engine which means when the belt breaks the valves stop turning, but the pistons don't. They come up and beat the valves to death. Very expensive. If it is non-interference, you will just need a belt. Generally on North American Fords, if it has a timing belt it is non-interference. Morlok mentioned variable cam timing. Some newer vehicles have this. It can cause problems, but shouldn't cause the car to stop running. They may need the car for a week because of parts supply, but timing belts are usually 2-4 hours work, and chains 4-8 hours. If the valves got beat, then you could be into the thousands of dollars.

'00 Renault Laguna Break 1.6 16V runs on LPG (G3 gas installation)
being repaired by the Renaultdealer, which has all parts in-house.
I heard today that the valves and the bearings (twin, stacked bearings) are either gone or in need of refurb.
happened on the freeway, car stopped within 25 meters - engine sounded like it was about to crack, with a lot of noise, so I'm told by my mom.

  12. sibeer

That sounds like an EXPENSIVE repair. You should post the cost here when it's done.

This thread has opened the door for a sharing of info. We all use computers(duh), my 1978 280Z has a brain. though you can't plug into it, a 1986 Nissan 240SX had an interface of sorts that gave a series of LED flashes, very similar to the light panel on the back of my Dell XPS 1000, except Nissan stuffed thiers under the passeger seat, you needed a repair manual to know it existed, let alone 5 yrs of yoga class to be limber enough to read it. Now on my buddies 1996 Buick, right under the dash beside the console is a port plug that you can plug an adapter($100-$500 easy), then you plug the reader (cheap- $$$$) , start the car, flip a switch, and read every thing that is happening in that motor.
If my buddy hadn't been a heavy equipment mech. he wouldn't have had access to adapter module & reader.
My point is that it would be simple for the auto makers to, even as an option, build the reader right into the vehicle. Hell with OnStar during your warrenty period they could fix or diagnose the vehicle in transit.
But, that would put major crimp in the dealer cash flow.
Wait till our friend here reports back with the bill, ouch!

*OUCH!!* If it is at the Renault Dealer it will be mega bucks. I had literally a few long scratches down my Megané (argued with a wall) and it was over $1200. I hope you have good insurance???

  15. fleppen

    fleppen Gumshoe

best insurance, but they won't cover it and car's out of warranty so it'll have to be paid out of the pocket.

  16. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

Ouch!! Car is only 4 years old...what's the mileage?

  17. fleppen

    fleppen Gumshoe

approaching 150.000 kilometers, dunno what that is in miles.

  18. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

Did your Dad ever have the cam belt changed?

  19. fleppen

    fleppen Gumshoe

    yes, at 115.000kms.
which was the same time the stabilizor stuff got replaced and the airco got fixed :)
lamest thing is; my dad was about to replace this one with a new Megane diesel, oh well, guess that'll have to wait...

Come to think of it I've just given my car the kiss of death, while in dealers arranging service, I was chatting to the chief tech and he asked how the car was going... I said "wonderful, no problems at all"

I really dont want to start the car now, may put rabbits foot on keyring... OH sod it may put whole rabbit on the keyring if it would help.

With the price of petrol in the UK at present, those monsta yankee gas guzzlers would have me broke in a month ;)

  30. fleppen

    fleppen Gumshoe

hehehe shouldn't have said that Halo :p:D

the repaircosts for those interested are about €1000,- or approx. 12- 1300 us $ orso.

  31. DavidGP

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

Tell me about it Flepp! fortunatly my warranty is ok till 2007.

€1000 OUCH... I bet your dad wasnt too happy about that outlay, concidering that could have paid a huge chunk off a new car, Renault/Citroen/Peugeots do tend to have high repair costs compaired to some of the others.

  32. scorcer

I figured ya had'em, just didn't know if ya called'em
    "knicker-twisters" or somthin like that :p :p

  33. fleppen

    fleppen Gumshoe

yeah well, good thing we have the head mechanic fixing it
however they called for my dad today which could also mean that instead of fixing the engine they're going to give it a new heart alltogether or something like that... OR that is'fixed already

I'll report back when I know what they called about :D

yeah indeed, we lucked out with the stabilsor stuff back then, that was all warranty stuff, otherwise the airco alone would've set us back a good €600

  34. fleppen

    fleppen Gumshoe

haha, it gets better, they called to let my dad know the problem was worse than they thought so repair is now up to €2300,- or +/- 2700 us $.

all valves are goners, one type of chain is a goner too and all this by one tiny little bolt that decided to go AWOL...

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

Gezzuz Flepp, this is looking nasty.. I would be very weary of them now as whats next they find something else and bump the cost up even more. It may have been a better option to get second hand recon engine ( dunno what the price of those are but would be interesting to find out ), run that for a while and trade in for new one.

  36. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

Flepp...get your Dad to ask for all parts they remove from the car to be returned to him. Certainly in the UK it is your right, and that way you can check if they really needed to be replaced.

doubt it'll be necessary, my dad called with Renault today and they said something like this shouldn't happen on a car that young and that they'll help settle things between the dealer and my dad :)

  40. DavidGP

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

That sounds good, nice one Renault :) your dad must have got a good customer service rep who was willing to help.

  41. Lev

    Lev MajorGeek

Call me a cynic, but was that before or after your Dad asked for the damaged parts back? Hehe. I've just been through this with a well known PC retail store after they fried my Dad's motherboard and tried to dodge the inevitable crossfire.

  42. fleppen

    fleppen Gumshoe

He always asks for the parts that were replaced, so that's nothing new :)
the dealer however did try to f*ck us over by having both my dad and Renault pay.

the Renault rep said that in cases like these usually Renault takes all the repaircosts, so the customer doesn't have to pay, the dealer tried to get us to pay and then claim the damage at Renault.
