Hi, would anyone mind helping me?
I've just formatted my hard disk and reinstalled Windows XP. It got to the final reboot where I was meant to take out the intallation CD and go on my happy way but it freezes shortly after the Windows XP loading bar comes up. I can start in safe mode fine, but not normally.
Is there any way I can find out what is wrong please?
I have attached the instructions I followed from my PC manufacturer.
    Thanks,
    Tom

personally I would just reformat it again, and then reinstal windows.
You want a nice clean instal, no problems.

Thanks for your advice. I've tried it but each time it freezes at the same point. Is it a dodgy recovery disk do you think?

Have you changed any hardware since owning the computer? It sounds like there's a conflict between your current computer configuration & what's on the recovery CD, especially considering safe mode works.

    Hi, thanks for your response!
I have installed are wireless network card, a firewire card, extra RAM and possibly replaced the network card. Would you advise I remove all of these until after Windows is fully installed and the re-install them?

Absolutely. Get it as close as possible to the original configuration & see if you can then boot normally. I suspect it'll work.

    Hi Wavetar,
Sorry to bother you again but I've tried to remove everything and no luck. Do you have any other ideas please?

Did you remove these components through Device Manager or just pull them out?

Just pulled them out but I assumed having reinstalled windows from scratch their drivers etc would have disappeared... not so?
    Thanks,
    Tom

If safe mode works, I would probably boot into safe mode and go through device manager, and disable any hardware you don't absolutely need to boot (video card, sound card, dvd/cd drives, ports, usb hubs (if you don't use a usb keyboard), etc etc.

Reboot in normal mode, see if it loads. If yes, then slowly renable things until you find out what the problem is.

No guarantee that you can disable the problem hardware, but it is probably worth a shot. :)
