Is there a free alternative to Partition Magic?

Or maybe there is a different solution...

I have XP installed on my laptop. My tiny 4.7GB hard drive is set up with two partitions. The C is about 3.4GB (3.3GB free space) and the D is about 1.2GB (140MB free space). Everything except for 1 program I don't need is on C.

I would like to reallocate most (if not all) of the space from C onto D. I played with a couple partitioning programs, but they were demos so none of the changes I made would take. I am hoping there is either a free program that will apply the changes, or something that exists in XP that I was too stupid to realize. I searched the forums here, but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for.

If I have to just do a completely new install of XP to get rid of the 2nd partition, that's fine. But I'd rather have some fun playing around with software and learning something new. Any ideas? Thanks guys.

By the way... both partitions are NTFS.

Cant you delete the partition under XP install? I have done that, but merging them... I am unsure.

Is that done by inserting the XP cd and then deleting from there? I looked into that a little bit and it gives the option to delete (as you mentioned), but no option to merge or reallocate free space.

Someone recommended using a utility called QTparted. I checked this out, but it appears to be a Linux thing (which I know nothing about). Other than that, I can't seem to find anything free (or even trial) that will do what I want.

Hi! You know, I also wanted something free, but unfortunately didn't find appropriate way. But I found that Acronis Disc Director was $20 cheaper than Partition Magic for example. Maybe this way will apt for you. Good luck.

The UBCD has several partition managers....

Ranish Partition Manager is a powerful hard disk partitioning tool.
It gives users high level of control for running multiple operating systems,
such as Linux, Windows 98/XP, FreeDOS, and FreeBSD on a single disk.

Partition Manager can create, copy, and resize primary and extended partitions.
It includes command line interface and simulation mode that works with large files
so you can safely experiment before working on the real hard drive partition tables.

None of the partition tools on the UBCD can manipulate NTFS partitions.

    Try Knoppix....

    http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html

Knoppix has a tool that is called qtparted, this is a NTFS partition manager that is a clone of Partition Magic.

I know this is a windows forum, but I still use Knoppix on occasion (rarely?) to fix windows problems.
