Unknown Startup Items

Having just cleaned a friend's computer, I decided it was time for mine. I ran all the standard checks, as listed in the Cleaning Procedure sticky at the top of the forum.

All the software came back clean - SuperAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes, etc, plus Spybot for good measure. The HJT logs however show some weird entries in startup, and sure enough, when I checked my startup folder, there were some odd .exe files.

I won't post the HJT logs until asked, but here are the suspicious entries:

    O4 - Startup: mel.bat422640 PM.bat
    O4 - Startup: mel.bat422644 PM.bat
    O4 - Startup: mel.bat422648 PM.bat

I cannot delete these entries as it says they're in use, but they don't appear in my task manager, nor have I any idea where they are located.

    Any suggestions?

I'm running Windows XP with Avast Antivirus and Online Armor Firewall. Any other information can be provided upon request.

    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the quick reply, Dr. M.

No record of navupd.dll found on a search, which included hidden files and folders.

    :)

The only other reference I've found is for Money Startup.exe.

*There are no other returns for the files you question. If Money Startup.exe also isn't found, I suggest that you run the cleaning procedure.

Please follow the instructions in the below link and attach the requested logs when you finish these instructions.

Be advised that once you complete the guide and post the logs -- you will be put in our work queue, where we work the oldest threads first.

    • If you have problems where no tools seem to run, please try following the steps given in the below and then continue on no matter what you find. You only need to try the TDSSserv steps if having problems getting scans in the Read & Run Me First.
    • If something does not run, write down the info to explain to us later but keep on going.
    • Do not assume that because one step does not work that they all will not.
READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide

    Notes:

    1. If you run into problems trying to run the READ & RUN ME or any of the scans in normal boot mode. You can run the steps in safe boot mode but make sure you tell us what you did later when you post logs. See the below if you do not know how to boot in safe mode:
    2. If you have problems downloading on the problem PC, download the tools and the manual updates for SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and Spybot ( links are given in the READ & RUN ME ) onto another PC and burn to a CD. Then copy them to the problem PC. You will have to skip getting updates if (and only if) your internet connection does not work. Yes, you could use a flash drive too but flash drives are writeable and infections can spread to them.
    3. To avoid additional delay in getting a response, it is advised that after completing the READ & RUN ME you also read this sticky:
    4. Any additional post is a bump which will add more delay. Once you attach the logs, your thread will be in the work queue and as stated our system works the oldest threads FIRST.
