OK, posted a moment ago. Have finally been able to gain access to friends thinkpad (IBM T21). I'm in Safe Mode now. A normal start-up results in the Windows XP log, the grey bar, then nothing but black. Anyone know what this could be??? I'm in safe mode but not sure where to start troubleshooting.

    Please help

In "Safe Mode" click on "Last Known Good Configuration" or try system restore by typing msconfig in "Run" box and go back to last date computer was working. Welcome to Major Geeks sorry about the delay in response, Hope that helps

tried the normal restore but had no luck. I'll try "last Known good config" but how can that be accessed/run/performed?
