My friend got a new Eee PC for Christmas and it is already infected.

Malware issues. (Tried hard to follow directions.:confused)

    Malware Defense was on computer.
I “uninstalled” the folder with Revo unistaller in hunter mode.
Could not install avg. still says Malware Defense is on computer.
Internet Explorer kept crashing or going to a rogue Malware protection download site.
Tried to install SAS, but could not install.
Tried the online version of SAS, but could not run that either.
Tried to run eset online, but it jammed at 30%
Got ccleaner on and ran it.
Got SAS to install but could not open it
Got Glary on and ran it too.
Put Advanced system care on and ran it.
Installed Spybot but could not open it.
Tried to install Mb. Exe but could not.
Got OneCare Safety scanner to run. Only about 50% after 2 hours . says it found 2 item no info was given.
Mb.exe finally installed. Would not run.
Opened ie to google and put in majorgeeks.
    It went here: http://www.beijingreview.com/search.php
Was finally able to run eset online, It found stuff and I saved the log.
Was able to install avast antivirus.
After reboot it computer hung at start up.
    Had to reboot to safemode,
Tried to run avast but could not
Ran ccleaner and glary utilities again.
Then tried to run Sas it ran and said if found 183 problems: some rogue malware stuff and the rest trojens. WhenI pressed the button to tell sas what I wanted done, the computer crashed. So I did not get a chance to delete the bad stuff. I did find a log however.
MB.exe finally said it loaded but I still cannot run it.
Could not get to the page to download combofix
Ran root repeal. It said that there were disk errors and to run chkdsk which I did. It said to run chkdsk /f which I tried to do. If it did, it ran so fast that I did not see it. However, after I rebooted the computer was able to log in normally!
Tried MB again but did not work
    Ran MGtools.

Oh yes, both ie and firefox are hijacked to us-scann.com or yahoo sites.
Rogue antimalware keeps trying to download.

    Thanks again for your help.

Please double-click the RootRepeal.exe previously downloaded.

    * Select File then Scan
    * On the Select Drives form select drive C by "ticking" the box for drive C and click OK
    * When the scan is complete - highlight each of the following file(s) (one at a time if more then one is listed) by left clicking it. Then use right mouse click and select the Wipe File option only for each file.
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\H8SRTejkdefsfkt.dll

    * After Wiping all files, immediately reboot your pc!

After reboot, download/install/update and run the scanning tools you couldn't run!

Now see if you can download and run ComboFix.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    * logs from scans that wouldn't run before
    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hello Tim,

rolleyes I THOUGHT I DID what you asked for, but realized I not do it right so I had to redo several of the scans.

combo fix installed but would not run.
then to test computer I tried to install avg. still will not install. it says that Malware Defence is still installed

so I ran ccleaner advanced system care and glary utilites to see the file was just leftovers.

This did not delete the Malware Defence file so avg still not loaded

However, my browsers do not seem as hijacked as before.

    ready for more directions

Did you run the Rootrepeal fix?? Where is the new log?

You have no AV program installed!!

Combo was having problems so it is just as well it didnt run.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\Avenger.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Grrr, it ate my reply!!!!!
    :(

    I will try again:

Yes I ran Rootrepeal fix; Where is the new log? When I pushed the "make a report button" it did nothing, I took a picture of the screen to show you that it did not find anything. It is attached to my last email.

I have tried putting on a antivirus but had not been successful.

avg will not install. Avast installed but skipped rather rather than deleted melicious files, So I deleted it. This time I tried antivar. It installed but will not update. I ran it anyway. It found 2 HTML/Crypted.Gen - Malware 2 Files were moved to quarantine.

    Ran Avenger and MGtools

Removed antivar and tried to install avg. Still says Malware Defender is installed.

Reinstalled antivar still can not update. Trying to manually download a file even though I have

dsl it is loading at 16kb a second. Now that it is downloaded, it will not unzip, nor will antivar use it.

:confused Just to ease my mind, if you think I need to reinstall windows, you would tell me? I will also continue to clean if you think that is ok, too. ;)

That language bar keeps wanting to install even though I told it not to.

Still having trouble opening some majorgeek pages
Keeps eating my majorgeeks login too

    But I have sound today.

Friend told me her son got infected because he went to porn sites. Does Majorgeeks have a listing for a program that will stop people from going to those sites?

will run avair again even without the update.

    Thanks for all your efforts.

You are probably having problems updating Avira because there are so many left over traces of AVG on your system.

Please go here ( http://www.avg.com/us-en/download-tools ) and download and run the AVG Removal Tool.

    Now to be sure:

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now copy just the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.

    * C:\Avenger.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hello TIM:
    Downloaded avgremover and ran it.

Tried to update avira - No go.

However, for some reason it says that the manual update I did on the 26th was now installed. So I did a new scan.

    Begin scan in 'C:\'
    C:\MGtools.exe
    [DETECTION] Is the TR/Drop.Agent.blby Trojan
    C:\pagefile.sys
[WARNING] The file could not be opened!
[NOTE] This file is a Windows system file.
[NOTE] This file cannot be opened for scanning.
    C:\System Volume Information\_restore{AD59D2D3-9557-4F15-938F-8763BF16B5A2}\RP18\A0005906.dll
    [DETECTION] Is the TR/PCK.Tdss.AA.3381 Trojan

    Beginning disinfection:
    C:\MGtools.exe
    [DETECTION] Is the TR/Drop.Agent.blby Trojan
[NOTE] The file was moved to '4bd5c635.qua'!
    C:\System Volume Information\_restore{AD59D2D3-9557-4F15-938F-8763BF16B5A2}\RP18\A0005906.dll
    [DETECTION] Is the TR/PCK.Tdss.AA.3381 Trojan
[NOTE] The file was moved to '4b91c61e.qua'!

    Ran MGTools analyzer
only one line was there R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file) and I deleted it

Ran fixme.reg and got success message

    Ran ccleaner

    Ran C:\MGtools\GetLogs

I can now update avira but can not start the guard.

    games and internet seem file.

To see if I could do it I ran spybot.

It did run and found this:
    --- Search result list ---
Fraud.ActiveSecurity: [SBI $D4BA6A8C] Settings (Registry value, fixed)
    HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2436678053-2237440105-1190371371-1006\Software\eee0bd2f-ff2e-46ef-83fb-d4fda84462a3

Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter_disabled: [SBI $2E20C9A9] Settings (Registry change, fixed)
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wscsvc\Start

Right Media: Tracking cookie (Internet Explorer: Verona Gilliland) (Cookie, fixed)

    I deleted them.

Still can not start avira guard.

However, Secunia pci started working again

Windows Security alerts started working again too

It reminded me that I did not have a firewall activated, So I fixed that.

I then checked the firewall to see if it was blocking avira. It was so I changed the settings. It did not help. I tried a restart to see if that helped but it did not.

I am not fond of avira, and would rather have avg on instead, once the computer is clean.

    What should I do now?

This is obviously a false positive:

    Begin scan in 'C:\'
    C:\MGtools.exe
    [DETECTION] Is the TR/Drop.Agent.blby Trojan

Go to start / run / and type:
    services.msc

Scroll down to the Avira AntiVir Guard (AntiVirService) and see if it is set to either manual or auto.

Your logs are clean, so you will need to post in the software forum for further assistance. ( As a side note, I remove Avira from my machine and am testing out Microsoft Security Essentials).

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real-time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    5. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    6. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    7. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    8. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore ato create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Tim,

Not sure what happened but Malware Defender is back. I am running Malwarebytes and I will also run MGTools and send you the logs.

    Hello Tim,

I was checking the computer to see if avira was running good before I finished the rest of your instructions. I went to services.msc and it said it was disabled. I changed it to automatic. and I thought all was well because it started to run. But then I triedto update, and it was blocked from doing so.
So I reinstalled avira and it still would not update just like it did when I was infected.

I then deleted avira and tried installing avg and sure enough Malware Defender would not allow it to install.

I ran malwarebytes and Rootrepeal and mgtools and have attacted the logs.

I then added Microsoft security essentials. I am not sure it is running correctly because it is not giving me a report when it is done scanning.

Not sure what to do now.
