    Hello,

I can't say there is a terrible amount to describe but that may be due to me not usually being the one using this machine.

However, i scanned the pc using avg 2011 and it picked up 8 infections, 4 of which seem to be in the memory and the other 4 just seem to be duplicates of the same thing( just not in the memory) , from what i can tell they've attached themselves to files in System32 which worries me to say the least.

Considering all the sensitive information on this machine i can't afford to let any of that be "stolen" as such.

Would greatly appreciate any help received on this.

Do you have your Windows XP Operating system disk? Or can you get hold of one?

Okay that's great because this file is infected:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ndis.sys

and so is this one by the looks:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\DllCache\ndis.sys

I do not think you have any more copies of the file on your machine that we can replace the bad ones with, however let's run a check to be certain

    SystemLook

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
    Download Mirror #1
    Download Mirror #2

    • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
    • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
      Code:
      :filefind
      ndis.sys
    • Click the Look button to start the scan.
    • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please attach this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

    Here you go.

and thank you for taking the time to look into this :)

EDIT: Forgot to put in on desktop before scanning, however after doing so the results were the same.

Yuk, yes, we will need the disk and the use of the recovery console to get this problem resolved. Let me know when you are ready to begin. :)

We may not need the CD after all...

Now download and save this XPsp3bu.exe to your C:\ root folder ( or to your Desktop if you have a problem saving to the root). You must do this properly. Now run the XPsp2bu.exe program by double clicking on it. You may or may not notice a quick flash of a black window. This is normal. The program runs quickly and just extracts some files we need. This will not fix anything and neither will the below. These are necessary steps so that I can prepare the next fix.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\MGlogs.zip

Well thats a relief those windows cd's give me the creeps...

    As requested MGlogs.

Yea, I know what you mean, plus it's easier this way.

This might be all I get round to until sometime later in the day but I am hoping this will do the trick, and then I will scan through your logs afterwards and remove any other remaining malware.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    FCopy::
    C:\MGtools\temp\ndis.sysmg | c:\windows\system32\drivers\ndis.sys
    C:\MGtools\temp\ndis.sysmg | c:\windows\system32\DllCache\ndis.sys

    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

  17. ashrok

    ashrok Private E-2

Saving the log takes longer than scanning :p

And here is the final product

    Don't forget this part :p

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

I was going to try to be sneaky and edit it in, but the timelimit for editing was up :-D

Could have been the perfect crime, anyways heres the logs.

EDIT: just realized what 'MGtools' stands for -.-' and it took me that long.

    Naughty, naughty! LOL

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

Tell me the contents of this folder?

    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\MFAData

I suggest you run the Official AVG Removal Tool

Make sure you also delete any AVG folders in Program Files and Documents & Settings/Application Data directories.

    Install some anti virus.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

How are things running for you?

  21. ashrok

    ashrok Private E-2

Ran the HJT and checked / fixed.

There are 4 Folders within C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MFAData, 'logs' 'mkt' 'pack' 'selfupd', and 2 other files being mfaurlconf.ini
    and state.dat

Within the folders is a plethora of other files, im assuming something to do with AVG as there seem to be avg named files in the 'Selfupd' folder

i've uninstalled avg just for doing the disinfection realizing it really just gets in the way. going to go for avast! as i personally think its the better free scanner atm.

removed remnants of avg as requested. ( will install avast as soon as were finished ) :)

    MGlogs as requested.

Things seem to be running alright, my biggest concern was the security of the computer.

Thanks once again for taking all this time to tend to my issues :major

Well, I think you are all set up now! You can follow final steps.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
