In the process of cleaning a laptop. I followed all the instructions beginning with Basic Maintenance and following the links to Windows XP cleanup. I got all the way through step 1 and in step 2, attempted to run combofix. The blue screen came up and said 'please wait - combofix preparing to run - attempting to set a new system restore point' and that is where it remains. I was afraid to try anything on my own to fix it so here I am.

Any help you can offer will be appreciated.

Just stop combofix for now and continue on with the rest of the instructions.

Thanks for your help. You'll probably hear from me again as I head further down the cleanup path.

I stopped combofix and rebooted. Now I have lost the ability to connect to the internet and the computer is VERY sluggish. I continued with the instructions and ran the MGtools step. It ended with the processdll.exe problem but because I am unable to connect to the internet I can't download updates. I await your expert advice. :cry

    thanks in advance

ps. the inability to connect to the internet is due to losing the WEP key for the connection during the combofix step. The owner of the wireless network (my neighbor) set me up and then was deployed to Iraq. Is there any way to retrieve the key he entered into my system?

    Hi dibee,

Can you go back to a restore point just before you used Combofix? If you've never done this before, go to Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore
check the box to Restore my computer to an earlier time and click on Next. You'll see a calendar with highlighted dates. Choose one of the dates just preceeding these problems and allow your system to return to that date. See if the problem goes away.
    For Vista: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial143.html#restore

See if that gets your connection back?
