Fan problem on Graphics card... =/

Ok,

Basically my Graphics card fan would make a sort of grinding noise whenever i switch the machine on... maybe last max 30 mins odd....

then as long as it stayed on it would be fine......

I ignored this for a while... but it eventually bugged me enough where i took the graphics card out and tightened a few screws.....

Only problem is now the grinding noise wont stop ! =-(((

My graphics card is a Winfast A400 GT .... or Geforce 6800 GT, whichever you prefer ;p

It has a heat sink mounted on both sides.... now when i took the card out i noticed that the 2 bottom screws were sticking out about 1/4 centimetre more than the top 2..... so i tightened them..... the top 2 wouldn't even tighten anymore anyway ... so i figured that the bottom 2 must have gotten loose... (i thought thats what was causing the grinding noise)....

Anyway...

If anyone can help me out here of how i can stop it ... i would be be grateful.

it could be that the fan is starting to wear out in which case u need replace the fan asap.

 

Does sound like a fan wearing out. I've had to replace a few myself. There is a pretty good selection at Directron.com . . . I haven't checked newegg.com for any but I'd imagine they have them as well.

 

i've only had it for 9 months tho... how can it wear out after that....

 

I had a fan on an external harddrive enclosure wear out 3 months after I bought it - started making this awful grinding/shriek noise. Sometimes you get a bum fan.

any idea why when i tightened the screws that hold the back heatsink in... the noise got worse?

 

Might have warped the fan body a bit. On smaller fans it's easy to do.

 

also... if it is just the fan.... (its a small 2-4cm fan) can i just get that or do i need to buy the whole cooling kit?

 

Sorry - working . . . Go to newegg.com and search for video card fans, or Directron.com and do the same (tigerdirect.com may have them . . . but they take a while to deliver the goods, in my experience). I've never searched newegg, but I have purchased replacement video card fans from Directron.

The only moving part that could be making noise from your video card would be it's cooling fan . . . if there are no screws or cables/wires/components hitting the blades . . . then it is the fan

If the noise is coming from your vid fan, that should be the only thing you need to replace. In my experience, anyway. Make sure it's not something else. Hard drives can make weird noises too

 

If you spin the fan a worn clicking bearing is obvious,it can be heard and felt

If its integrated into the heatsink may aswell slap on a full new cooler as it probably impossible to change out the fan without removing the heatsink, that or RMA it you have every right for a replacement card as it has a three year warranty,just depends how much postage costs,couldnt say without going through that specific RMA process

 

Well,i had the same problem with my video card,took it entirely APART,and saw that the fan isnt in place,so cleaned it,tightened it a little,glued something together whats rotating inside the fan,and well,that fixed the overheating problem,but im going to buy a new fan asap,cuz its seems the only way to fix this problem,i suggest you to do the same ; ) , good luck
