    Hey all,

Beefy from Beefysworld here.. You might remember us from when you zoomed pass us on the Folding charts a while back. No? Oh well, it's not important...

What is important is that we are back and ready for a challenge. So how about it? I propose a little 'race'. First team to, let's say #80? No prizes, just bragging rights. :)

We're kinda making a point to get back at the teams that have zoomed passed us of late, and now that we've got a little extra firepower, it makes things interesting.

So, what do you say? Surely you won't let a team with only 30 active folders beat you... Why, that'd almost make you MinorGeeks.. Hope to see you at #80. ;)

I am only running 3 computers at this time, who knows perhasp more may be added.
I am fixin' to move back to the fresh air and clean water in West Virginia and most probably will go down in my production until all is settled in.
I am hopeful thereafter my production will supersede my previous attempt(s).
    btw...

Maybe it's time for some of us who've been quiet for awhile to rise to a new challenge... Accepted.

I'll be adding two machines in the next 2 weeks. Anybody willing to make a similar pledge?

Update: After several missteps, bits of broken hardware, and other mishaps, I have gotten one of the two promised machines up and running. The other is being somewhat resistant and seems to have an intermittent, but frequent, power problem that I am still trying to solve. How are we doing against the beef? It appears that they’ve blown right by us. Is there anyone else out there who can throw a little more horsepower at this?

Hellooooo…It’s been soooo quiet around here lately.

395 inactive Folders on our team - leaving a mere 79 propping us up.

I said a long time ago to get Active Folder icons up on here - people like these things :D

    That said - 2 of Beefy's are churning out over 5000 points a day!!

Im running on 3 processors lol, although most work gets done overnight since when I am using my computers its for devoloping so I need full cpu time, FAH is still running but doesn't get a look in.

I had a little problem with one box a couple of weeks ago.
I'm trying to stay in the top 20 producers with 3 comps -
AMD 1050 Mhz, AMD 1.2 Ghz, Pent4 3 Ghz All 24/7 if possible.

For whatever it is worth I've added 2 machines to the cause, a 2400 Athlon currently working on a 5000 WU project that looks to take around 3-4 days, and a 1000 Duron. I had to take the BBS computer off FAH because it was crashing when it was time to turn in the results. When I have time I'll reinstall the OS. Not a big loss, as it was a 200Mhz K6/2.

I know this is off topic, but does anyone know how well the new Core 2 Duo machines are doing with Folding? How about running multiple Folding processes at once? Any hints and tips out there?

I just added another PC and have another on the bench waiting to be repaired. That will give me ten machines. The latest is a replacement for the wife. It is a AMD 64 X2 4200. It seems to be very quick. I have two AMD 64 X2 PCs. I haven't really looked into running two Folding job at the same time on one of the Dual Core PCs. Is that possible?

Well, I'm moving up in the ranks, currently #237, but other than that we don't seem to be moving anywhere. In fact, we may have gone backwards. Someone please tell me I'm misreading it.

I have problems with my Linux boxes not wanting to send points, for some reason none of them will connect to the internet lately.
I guess I can install windo$ in them and go that route
I have 6 PC's at home with 2 more on the way and 2 at work churning out, I have 3 running linux and as I stated for some reason the stopped being able to connect to the internet.
I had to use then all from time to time it see what is happening and to make sure updates where working and they all worked up untill last week.

Well i've moved into the top 100 (96) for the MGs team, hope my efforts (well my computers efforts) are getting us somewhere, every bit helps in the race for the top AND helping the research.

Every Box has an AV (that gets updated every three days) and a Firewall plus I run a Cisco router with a firewall.
I check them every day to ensure they are working as they where, I have work units in the 30's on each. Granted some are slow but they still produced.

    When this all occured:
It was when we had a thunder storm that went over a week ago, I shut them all down so as to not have a problem. When I rebooted things seemed fine, I would log on to a site and get past any cached page so I knew it was working and only the linux boxes wolt log on.

    The OS's:
I am running an older version Suse8.2 I have a brand new PC Linux version 9.23 on the way and expect it in a few days.
all other boxes are Window$ OS's, XP or 2000.

    The room:
stays at a constant 68 degrees, it is almost totally dust proof, the boxes only shut down for servicing once a month where they where opened and cleaned out. The room has its own electrical circuits dedicated to the PC use with GFI protection and UPS Back up power.
This is how serriously lazy I am that I do not want to have a problem, I'd go all out so I do not have to go back and repair a problem due to some small thing.

Oh well, I looked up Beefy's profile, then looked up their stats at Stanford. Looks like they won. We're at 89, and their at 80 out of 45403.

  24. matt.chugg

According the overtake. our rate of production is lower than theirs so we can't technically overtake them (beefysworld) as they will be moving up at a slightly higher rate than we are.

I got one more computer to go in today or tomorrow whenever I get round to taking it out the box, I was second in the provider list yesterday but Cherokee_1 is 2nd now and I'm 3rd with rmsubasic 4th. I reckon I need 6 more computers to take the lead in the providers!

Ah, as it turns out I've added a few boxes to the cause. I've got an IBM xSeries server with a P4, an ancient Compaq server and also I've got a VPS (Virtual Private Server) in the states somewhere which is working it's little cotton socks off :)

Plus of course my box here - which is a little bit aged but it's ok.

As a "Newbie"(only been "Folding" for over a week) I cannot understand why there are so many "inactive" folders. I agree with Nitrowing an "Icon" next to your User name on MG for active folders, would cause those inactive members to rejoin, and those that want to join would visually see who was folding. You could also have the "Icon" change color as per your folding contribution. It is such a shame that a great site like MG is being whipped in folding by other lame sites, dang my Geek pride has been tarnished:rolleyes:

  28. matt.chugg

If we were allowed active avatars I could make something similair to the sig images for the folders to use as their avatars. I think the sig images on eoc are a little large though.

My thinking was like the trophy icon you have from the Arcade link Matt, except make it the folding symbol and changeable colors, if we can do it for the arcade section why not for folding, hey whats more important games or LIFE (don't answer matty I know:) ;) :D )

heh I only got my trophy on a technicality! Theres a bug in the game ;) doesn't take a genius to figure it out!

Watch me lose it now lol

A list of recent completed WU's, in sequence of last entry first, would be nice. That way we could see who was active, and who was not.

  32. matt.chugg

Well eoc have xml data so its possible to make your own graphs etc, I don't do php though so it would be external on my own server using asp.net but xml is nice so anything is possible ;)

  33. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

I did make a php script to parse the stats from Folding@Home directly but it's gone walk abouts. The EOC XML feed is good enough - and they apply some statistical analysis for you so that makes things easier heh.

  34. matt.chugg

    matt.chugg MajorGeek

i'[ve not actually looked at the data, but if they allready analysed it a bit thats cool. wonder if there is a vbullitin add-in that would work with this to add something similair to the trophy.

Question: running a slow computer folding in safe mode with the folding graphics minimized should be about as fast as it can go (in Win98se), since all other processes are basically nonexistant. True or False?

I have a LOT of older computers I could connect up, possibly through an old style KVM switch box. Is it worth the bother you think? I would also have to run cable for the network, I really don't need my living room even more crowded with computer jun... stuff.

I'm currently at 154, and gaining on mcadam88 and Twistid. I know it's petty, but it feels good.

I use the non-graphical version 5.02 on win98se minimized in regular bootup.
The only drawback using this version on win98se is you best make sure not to allow downloading the 5MB. WU.
I read at the Folding@Home forum.
As to your question concerning the lower end computers,I used a socket 7 450MHz and it took 31 days to finish a timed WU which was one day overdue so I would suggest using the option to use deadlineless WU's if your computers are this slow to have running in safe mode.

  40. ItsWendy

    ItsWendy MajorGeek

I'm not sure what a 5MB WU looks like, so far I've been getting nothing but 20000 WU problems on both machines. I downloaded Client 4.0.

From the sounds of it some minimum specs are in order, something like a 500 Mhz K6/2. Anything less is burning more electricity than it's worth. I have another 1800 Athlon that needs rebuilding, it may be next. I've given up on the 200Mhz K6 BBS computer, it does what I need it to, it doesn't need to do anything else. I may press the 3 hop rule on ethernet, a router and 2 hubs on the folding computer in the back bedroom. Haven't decided yet.

  41. noprob

    noprob Corporal

My thought on using the lower end computer(s) to fold would be no less then a K7 slocket 800MHz/Intel P3 800MHz with the option to Not allow downloading WU over 5MB also when I first became a member it all stated with a Dell Optiplex Intel P3 733MHz :)
It also seems the deadline less WU's are few and far between or maybe they do not have them anymore?
also I noticed a WU I recieved this past summer even tho it took near 14 days to complete it netted our team 1,116 points, but only allowed on a linux distro?
This was done on an XP 1800+ <1,533MHz>
