    XP Home SP2 -

Continually getting the following error when trying to run most Windows proegrams (IE, etc)...

rundll32.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point SHRegGetValueW could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance,

Install SP2. Should cure it. Unless you already have?

Hmmm. Didn't think to check that, but before the repair install it had SP2, now it shows as not having SP2.

I'll try installing it and see what happens. Thanks man!

Trying to install SP2 and get the following...

Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the Cryptographic service is running on this computer.

So I go to start the Cryptographic service in Services.msc, and get the following...

Could not start the Cryptographic services on the local computer. Error 127: The specified procedure could not be found.

    Any suggestions?

Since you had to get dll files from a few different sources while installing, I'd try an SFC /scannow.

Going through the entire routine of uninstalling SP 2, including the recovery console option if applicable (check for the folder in normal mode first), might help as well, though it might be a tad risky at this point: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875350/en-us

Alot of crazy dll errors can also be resolved by installing mdac 2.8, as well. That might not need the crypographic service to install.

Just a few suggestions, use your own judgement with them.

I admire your persistance, I would have formated a long time ago! :)

I actually did, twice. It didn't seem to help.

    SP2 doesn't appear in Add/Remove Programs.

That would be too easy! I love challenges. Actually, if it were my own, I would have done a clean install, but since it's for a freind, I'd rather give it back to them with everything "intact"

Could the problem with installing SP2 be due to the fact that after the repair install it now wants to be activated again? I just figured I'd do that last.

Stop the cryptographic service, rename C:\windows\catroot2, reboot, then try the install again.

    No.

The reason you are getting these errors are file and registry entry mismatches due to the repair over XP Sp2 with an earlier version. The Home/Pro switch may play some part too, if they were different service pack levels. Its easier to install SP2, than to replace all of these files.

The cryptographic service is already off.

    Catroot2 is actually in C:\Windows\System32

I tried to rename it to Catroot2b, but it just created an new folder called Catroot2b. So then I tried to rename the original Catroot2 to Catroottwo, but then it just created a new folder called Catroottwo. The weird thing is, each of the two new folders have varying contents.

    Makes sense.

However, you need to have the crypto service running to install SP2.

I knew the folder would rebuild.

So how do I get the crypto service running?

On the Cryto Properties, it says Path to Executable:
    C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs

Could there be a problem with svchost.exe?

No. What happens when you try to start it?

    from a cmd.exe prompt, type:

    net start cryptsvc

Thanks for the link. I followed every step to the letter. Just can't get the crypt service to start. Keep getting error 127. Most of the things in that link I had already tried.

Just so I understand what is going on here, I did a repair install on an SP2 machine with a non-SP2 disc, and that effectively wiped out SP2? And now all of these errors are because the PC is still acting like SP2 is installed, but can't find certain SP2-specific files? And now I can't install SP2 because the Cryptography service can't start?

So why won't the Cryptography service start? Is it because of the missing SP2 files, kinda like a catch 22?

So if I'm understanding this, all I need to do to fix everything is to install SP2, but in order to do that, I've got to get the Crytography service started first. Sounds easy enough?

    Got any other ideas?

Another solution for solving this problem (Not how to fix crypto-thing, but might help others who have the same problem):

Well, the problem isn't really installing SP2, it's this error 127. I have a feeling once that is overcome the SP2 install will be a breeze.

Everything that I've found on the net regarding the inability to install service packs basically lists the same steps, and it is assumed that the Cryptographic service is simply just "stopped", and that starting it again works.

In this case, no conventional method will force the crypto service to start.

Is there a way to just "fix" or replace the crypto service? Perhaps extract a good copy from the CD?

So if what I'm thinking is right, why not try slipstreaming my Home CD with SP2, then do another repair install?

    We'll see if it works.

    It can't hurt to try.

Okay, slipstreamed SP2 with my Home disc, and the damn disc image is like 740 MB. Too big for a CD-R. I don't get it. I did the exact same thing with Pro a whlie back and didn't have this problem.

Anyway, is there anything on the Home disc that isn't absolutely necessary? I've got to lose about 40 MB.

Thanks. I actually saw that link already and tried everything it suggested. It just seems that there is not really enough info out there on troubleshooting the Crypto service. There are a few sites, but they all list the same steps, just worded or ordered differently. Apparently this is not a common issue.

    Try: http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4444

From you initial size, it looks like you have done something incorrect.

Before I got my hands on the above, I use to slipstream the manual way.

That is a good method. The link I provided is more automated. For those who are scared of using command line tools :)

Well what do you know? The slipstreamed DVD worked like a charm. It did want to be re-activated before it would log me on, but that was no problem. After that, no more error messages! SP2 is completely installed, no issues with the crypto service.

Well, if I learned anything, it's to not attempt a repair install on an SP2 machine without an SP2 slipstreamed disc. I could have sworn I've done it before with no problems, but maybe not.

    Thanks as always Adrynalyne, theefool!
