Can Windows XP Mode be installed in Oracle VM VirtualBox, or does it only install in Windows Virtual PC?
Back in 2007 I installed Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 in Windows XP Home Edition. My PC had a 2.4GHz Celeron CPU dating back to 2004. I doubt it was capable of hardware-assisted virtualization. Now, according to Microsoft, Windows Virtual PC requires a CPU capable of hardware-assisted virtualization. My PC has a 1.8GHz Celeron CPU that's not capable of hardware-assisted virtualization.

I run both Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows XP Professional on a partitioned hard disc. Will this update cause any problems?

It would be nice, but the license key for XP Mode is only valid for Virtual PC.

If you have XP and 7 in dual boot why would you want XP Mode in a VM in Win 7? Anyway, your Paragon Hard Disk Manager can create a XP VM from your XP installation which can be run, as I understand it anyway, in VMware Player though I've not tested this myself as I no longer have a full XP installation I could use as base. I also understand that XP Mode is very buggy and of course is no longer supported in any way.

    - Wikipedia.

    I did consider VMware player.
I have Windows XP Professional SP3 on disc. I could just install it in Oracle VM VirtualBox or VMware Player but, I would prefer to have Windows XP Mode because the installed programs will be available from the Windows 7 start menu.
I want to ensure Windows XP Mode is running fine prior to wiping the second partition with Windows XP Professional SP3. I'm concerned about the update that removes the need for hardware-assisted virtualization. I don't know if it will conflict because I have "a combination of operating systems".

VMware Player has Unity mode, so all the VM's programs are available from the Win 7 Start menu. I guess VirtualBox has something similar, but TBH I wouldn't waste time on buggy XP Mode, I would install XP from disk. I have an XP VM in Win 7 using VMware and it's invaluable for my old flatbed scanner and a few other older softwares that can't run in 7.

Thanks Earthling. I'll have a look at your suggestion. Do I have to create an 'image' from the Windows XP disc?

Not if you have an optical drive as you can attach that to the VM.
