This is a repost. I had previously posted this question in this software forum but apparently an admin moved it to the Malware forum (this is the thread), who have redirected me back here.

    I'll restate the problem:

I'm experiencing 4 minute boot times on my 64bit Windows 7 Service Pack 1 desktop.

If I use msconfig.exe to disable all startup services it doesn't seem to affect the boot time.

By contrast, the safe mode w/networking boot time is about 30 seconds.

I've run CCleaner and the malware troubleshooting steps at the Win 7 Malware Removal/Cleaning Procedure page and still am seeing the slow startup.

Could I get a recommendation of assessment software I should run / logs I should provide in order to troubleshoot this problem?

    Thanks in advance.

It would help if you posted your PC's hardware specifications.

As it boots fine in Safe Mode it isn't hardware related but quite likely a driver issue. I would follow through Microsoft's clean boot procedure to try to isolate the problem.

Don't use MSConfig to control startups - see here: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=149804

I suggest that you use Autoruns to see and control what starts up: http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/microsoft_autoruns.html Uncheck those items that have no file or executable to run on startup.

Observe the important note in the article at the first link. However, you could use a diagnostic utility to determine the resource hog on start up: http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/autorun_organizer.html and then use the Autoruns program to disable.
