I'm running WinXP SP2 with Avast anti-virus, ZoneAlarm firewall, Ad-Aware, Spybot, Spyware Blaster, and WinPatrol. I'm obsessive about Windows Updates and keeping the apps listed above updated. I've been using Spybot for a long time, but a few months ago it stopped responding during scans when it came to WWWCoolSearch spyware. I used several tools to search out WWWCoolSearch and it wasn't found on my computer. I uninstalled and re-installed Spybot and now it stops responding during scans when it comes to Probot spyware! I Googled two fixes for Probot, but can find no evidence of it in my computer. I downloaded CounterSpy yesterday and it found only two tracking cookies, so I doubt the problem is with spyware. Any idea what is causing this?

Try scanning in Safe Mode to see if it works. Or change the Mode to Advanced, (Mode -> Advanced) click on the settings menu tab, then the settings menu item. In the radio buttons, select the "Run program once at next system start." Make sure "fix all problems" is set as well.

Since your obsessive [IMG] I'm assuming you have v1.4 with the defs from 6-2-05. If either of those scans works and finds nothing, then I wouldn't be too concerned.

    1. I have the newest version and defs and I always run Spybot in advanced mode (OBSESSIVE! :D )

    2. I ran both the startup and safe mode scans you suggested and Spybot still stops responding at Probot. When I ended the non-responsive program during the startup scan, a second Spybot icon appeared on my desktop!

    3. I set Spybot to ignore Probot and it stops responding at Winvestigator!

The point at which Spybot stops responding seems to be random. I'm not as concerned about having spyware as I am about not being able to complete spybot scans!

OMG! I fixed the problem purely by accident. In my last post I mentioned the second Spybot icon appearing on my desktop. Since I’m obsessive about a cluttered desktop :D , I opened the Properties dialog box for each icon so I could check the dates and delete the most recent one. When I clicked the Compatibility tab, they were both set in compatibility mode for Windows 95!! My computer has run WinXP Home from its creation and nobody else has access to it. I have never changed the compatibility of any program in my computer. How did this happen???
