For the past two weeks, I have a strange phenomenon occurring on my desktop. This happens about 10 minutes after booting up. A fragment of data, appearing as a small, rectangular black shaped icon (null icon)... appears on my desktop, located next to the date/time in the bottom right hand corner. I can drag it anyplace (while on the desktop screen), but I can NOT delete it... and then it appears ON TOP of every application I open. I move it to the top right hand corner, so it doesn't interfere/block the scroll down function on many applications. When I reboot... it's gone... but only for 5-10 minutes... then it reappears.

Here are the steps I've taken to attempt removing this aggravating icon:

    Ran CCLEANER
    Ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
    Ran SUPERAntiSpyware

This is on a Win 8.1 system I've been using problem free for 18 months, utilizing realtime internet security software. I can't remember the last time I downloaded/installed software... except automated system updates and my security software updates.

    Any ideas?? Thanks

Are you using Comodo software at all?

Yes. In fact I spent an hour online (GeekBudy) with them. All they did was close a few 'start up programs' and thought they fixed the issue. Ten minutes later it reappeared.

The worst part :)... the next day my yearly contract automatically renewed. I had intended to cancel, but forgot to go online and cancel.

Hopefully they will release a patch. You can temporarily end it's APPLICATION through task manager for that session, (which will clear remnant of icon) but when you reboot it will be back. Not topic for this forum though, as you can see. :)

Not sure what you mean. End what application.... COMODO Internet Security??? That would leave my system open. Are we sure that is the cause of this remnant? I've been using COMODO Internet Security for a year without issues... and this remnant only started appearing recently.

I'm going to say at this point, post in the software forum about it please. It's not topic for malware removal. :)

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.

    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
