    Hi everyone

I've been plagued by a rather nasty and malicious adware bug for the last few days. It reared it's ugly head in a number of ways, changing my home web address to softwarereferral changed my desktop to a red screen with a bio sign in the centre, added 3 adware icons to the desktop, constant popups, slowed the PC to a crawl. My f-secure reported a vondue and reported nnnljhfv.dll as the problem but could not do anything with it.

I tried so many different free anti adware products but to no avail. I then found this forum and followed the "Read & Run Me First" post exactly. To my amazement the nasty seems to have gone away, where's some wood to touch. My only concern is that when I ran Combofix no log was produced, so I cant be sure that it ran correctly.

I hadn't posted and asked for help directly originally, and thanked you peeps for producing such a useful guide on the welcome forum, but was advised to seek additional help to ensure the virus has gone.

Would anyone be willing to view the attached logs and help me to identify if the PC is now clean. Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to get combofix to perform properly and so do not have a log for that application.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following:

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it. This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.
    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now install:
    Java Runtime 6

Now please clean out these folders:
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
    C:\Documents and Settings\Simon Jones\Local Settings\Temp\

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

Be sure to tell us how things are running.

    Hi Tim

Thanks for spending time to give me assistance, it is very much appreciated.

I've followed your instructions, two of the lines you instructed me to check after running analyse where not listed, these are:-

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8E1BFC0E-8AD2-424D-AC8A-06038481516E} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\nnnljhFv.dll (file missing)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [00508cd9] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\wskibiqp.dll",b

I've also attached the 2 log files as instructed.

At the moment the PC seems to be running fine, but would be very interested to see what you make of the new logs.

Where on earth do you guys learn how to analyse all of this.

    Thanks again for your help.

    Hi Tim

My brain was not working when I last replied and had not double clicked the registry fixme file. Here are the logs after running the repair.

Looking better...just a few more items to remove:

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this and also attach the log from Avenger.

    Hi Tim

I managed to follow your instructions upto running avenger, but the PC will now not boot with a blue screen flashing up each time I try.

I managed to select do not restart on error, and the blue screen that flashes up says the following.

    Stop: c000021a{fatal system error}
The system manager initialization system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000034 (0x00000000 0x00000000)

I dont seem to be able to do anything to get it to reboot, even if I select the last point the PC was working at. I'm using my work laptop at the moment.

Any ideas how I can solve this problem

    Hi Tim

Once I have carried out the repair should I carry on with the mgtools part of your instructions, or does this repair change things a little.

    Thanks for your help

    Hi again Tim

Well my cherrished PC is back to life and my heart is running at normal speed again.:)

It's a bit slower than before but perhaps it's breaking it'self in again.

I carried out the MGtools step as well and have attached the files.

    Your logs look clean.

I suspect it is F-Secure that is slowing things down.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. If we used ComboFix then UNINSTALL COMBOFIX (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
    2.
    * Click START then RUN
    * Now type "%userprofile%\Desktop\cf" /u in the runbox and click OK.
    * Note: The space between the cf and the /U, it must be there.
    3. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    4. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    5. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    6. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Hi Tim

Thats good news, I'll carry out you next instructions since everything seems to be running very well, no signs of infection.

Once I've followed the next steps, I'll pop back and let you know how things are going.

Very many thanks for your time in helping me out.

Would you be able to point me in the right direction for learning how to do some of this analysis myself, I've become quite intrigued.

    Bel
