I have a 6 month old Compaq Presario V2000 1.5GHz Quanta Motherboard. Independent of the cpu usage the fan will start for a few seconds and then turn off. It did not behave this way when I first started using it. I have run all the programs and do not have any malware. I checked with tech supp and I am running the latest version of BIOS. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    thanks,

    Janette

Quite natural for Laptops to behave in this way, especially if the power settings have been changed for the Laptop/Portable or Max Battery. So check the power settings, they are in Control Panel > Power Options.

Its a way of perserving power, so when you are going a CPU intensive task or the CPU is just hot ( hits a certain ambient temp ) the fan kicks in for however long it needs to restore the optimum temp.
