    Trojan even*

    Hi there,

I have been plagued by this nasty causing random IE windows (I use chrome) to pop-up and turn my wave volume to zero.

I have been following the instructions set out in:
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=218334

Sure enough, I had unknown boot code in drives 0,1 and 2 (all partitions of one physical disk [well technically two physical disks as they are in a RAID0 setup]). I believe I have removed it successfully. I have reached the first getlogs.bat stage and I would really appreciate if someone could look over my logs to see if this is indeed the case or if it may return following a restart etc?

As an aside, I don't seem to be able to click on (or see for that matter) links in forum posts at MG with chrome? Is this a known issue or do I need to worry about other malicious software?

Thanks very much - this is the only place I have found that is of any help regarding this matter.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

It can be very dangerous to follow instructions that were not specifically written for you. The proper beginning steps are here: READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guidewhich provides us with other additional info we need to verify whether your PC is clean or not. Thus I can see your Black Internet Trojan has been fixed but I cannot tell you whether your PC is clean and I do see that there is more for you to do some of which is covered in the READ & RUN ME. So if you wish to continue and verify that you PC is clean, please run the READ & RUN ME. Otherwise at a minimum, uninstall all those old Java versions that are a security risk and install the current version. Also empty all of your Temp folders.

Likely a problem on your end with how you have Chrome setup or with a popup or adblocking program.

    Thanks Chaslang!

I have worked my way through the READ & RUN ME. I had trouble getting rootrepeal to work (stuck on initializing phase) but all the other logs are here. Hopefully its a clean bill of health. Looking forward to your input.

    Regards

You're welcome. Your logs show one item
    Code:
Warning: possible MBR rootkit infection !
    user & kernel MBR OK
Use "Recovery Console" command "fixmbr" to clear infection !
However I guessing that this is appearing because you skipped step 6 of the READ & RUN ME and did not disable Daemon Tools which can make it look like there is an MBR infection. Did you skip step 6? If so, then you are likely okay based on other logs.

However you still have one old Sun Java to uninstall: J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11

And you need to install the current version of Sun Java.

Thank you very much for your invaluable help Chaslang. I did indeed skip step 6, more out of carelessness than intent though.

Sorry for the (very) belated response.

    You're welcome.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 oof the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
