magic carpet: dosbox, vdmsound

I down loaded both of these programs to see if i could get magic carpet to work on my computer, dosbox gets it running but it's too slow to be playable, i was wondering if there is any way to change the speed at which dosbox runs the program, I looked around in it for commands but came up empty, any help is appreciated.
Also, vdmsound failed to load the game entirely, if you know the game the first screen selects language, that was fine, but the second screen to start playing/save/load games, would not load, the dos window would either close or the computer would crash.

 

my system specs are,

Windows xp:service pack2
celeron 4a 2400mhz
224mb ram
80gig hard drive

 

another option would be virtual pc from M$.. maybe.. it runs *any* os
