Printers sharing, but Files not

I just installed Zone Alarm in both our computers (desktop/laptop - via Linksys router) and I have them both set up the same way (with the appropriate ip address, etc). The desktop is fully networked with the laptop, but the laptop only can share the printer - the desktop files don't show up in MY NETWORK. What's up? I have the files on the desktop set to share. And both of these worked fine before I installed ZA.

Let me know your wisdom. Thanks, Stephanie

You need to tell Zone Alarm that you want to share files.
Open ZoneAlarm and go to "Firewall" on the left and then go to the "Zones" tab. near the bottom right corner you will find a button marked "Add>>". Click that button and go to "IP Range". add the range "192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.130".
That should be sufficent for you to make your network connections. If you have changed the default addresses in the Linksys router you will need to compensate accordingly.

I did this and it still didn't show my files on my desktop. Then I went to my Linksys site and realized that the address was "192.168.1.1" So then I put in the range "192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.100" and it still didn't work. My computer IP Addresses are already in ZA and their endings are 100 and 102...so then I put in the range "192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.130" and it still didn't show my files. Am I doing something wrong? I really appreciate the help.

Do you have any directories marked for sharing on your drives?

Can you ping the other computers? At command prompt type: ping 192.168.1.100 from the one that is 102.

The range doesnt need to be in ZoneAlarm if you already have them listed individually. The range is intended to allow access for computers that have a dynamic IP address which is provided by your router and by default starts at 192.168.1.100 and usually goes to 192.168.1.150. A dynamic address can change sometimes when it's renewed so the range in ZoneAlarm works better then the current specific address of the machine.

I tried to ping. The ping is working from 102 to 100, but when pinging from my desktop (which is 100) I get time outs pinging 102. Now I'm concerned I don't have the right IP address for my laptop. Can you remind me how to find out what my IP Address is?

I didn't think I needed a range if I had them in there individually, but I remember when I set this up years ago that the range finally helped out the situation.

And yes, I have my main 2 folders marked for sharing...MY DOCS and a folder I created with my husband's files.

Get your IP address by typing ipconfig at the command prompt

Did that and indeed, I was wrong - it's not 102, it's 101. So I changed eveyrthing in ZA, but still no luck. Do I need to restart my systems? I also have that huge range in there, too. So I don't know what's happening.

Re: dynamic address for my router...since it's 192.168.1.1. should I change it to end in 100? It seems like I can. Don't know if that will help anything.

Sorry for the delay, I had to go help my son move a sofa to his new apartment.

You should remove the entries you made in ZoneAlarm except the range. The range should be 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.130. There are 2 or 3 other things in there like loopback and probably your network card, leave those in. After setting the range be sure to click the apply button. I forgot to mention that before.

Leave you router settings as they are. The dynamic address in your router should be 192.168.1.1, DHCP should be enabled and you can set the available DHCP addresses to the same as the range in ZoneAlarm. Be sure to svae each page as you make changes.

Now try pinging. if successful but you still can't share, set up the username/password on both computers Example if 100 username is Bob then create Bob on 101. Passwords also need to be the same.

no worries about the delay, I'm just grateful you're helping me. I removed all other entries except the ones you suggested and clicked apply (which I was doing before) and the router settings are fine. Still no go. And I'm embarassed to say that I don't have passwords on my files...I have a password to log-in to my laptop, but I don't think I ever set one up on the desktop (please don't yell at me :( ) Are these the usernames/passwords you're talking about or did I just out myself for no reason?

I need to get to bed now, but will be able to come back to this tomorrow night. Thanks again!!

shnerdly is on the right track. WinXP pro requires passwords to logon across the network (unless you change a certain group policy). If you log onto PC1 as User1, then you must also have a User1 user on PC2. If you log onto PC2 as User2, you will need a User2 on PC1. Both users setup with the same password on both PC1 and PC2. User1 and User2 can have different passwords, just make sure User1s password is the same on both PC1 and PC2, and same for User2.

I don't have any passwords on my home PCs, we're not gonna give you grief over it, they're only necessary if security is an issue. If you don't like having to enter a password to logon to the desktop, try (on the desktop): Start->Run, 'control userpasswords2' (without the quotes). Uncheck the 'Users must enter password...' box, click 'Ok', and then type in the username and password of the user you would like to 'auto-logon'.

    Good luck,

    -K

(and good work so far shnerdly, sorry for hijacking your thread  )

edit: you weren't wrong about your IP in #7, SRBast. It can change between reboots, which is why shnerdly recommended the IP range (.100-.130) in ZA.
