New laptop– replacing Vista with XP?

My wife is looking to replace her desktop with a laptop soon, so I was somewhat surprised while researching Dells to see that the only option they have for OSs now is Vista. I'm not too keen on jumping to Vista this quickly for a few reasons, so that got me thinking... My question is simple: is there any conceivable issue with getting the laptop, then immediately formatting the drive and installing XP on it instead?

Expense? Vista would be free, you'd have to pay for a legit copy of XP that could get the necessary updates.

Problem is you would get the license for Vista on the system. So as Doofus said, you'd need both a copy of XP as well as an XP license to install. But assuming you have both those, there's no reason you can't do it.

Keep in mind that companies are likely to be selling Vista on the new systems, however their older model systems that they still have for sale will likely come with XP and an option to upgrade.

We have a big issue with Dell right now because we buy cheap systems from them for work but we don't want to implement Vista yet. But we don't want to have to get the systems and a bunch of XP licenses on the side...
