    A bit confused...

Msn Explorer won't accept my user name or password, it... since yesterday, has been rejecting them both. It comes up with a message saying they don't exist.. The same when i try to log onto Msn messenger, and this is not only with my user name. I tried another one and it's the same..

Then when i tried to log onto hotmail, i entered my password etc, and as the next page loads it always says the page cannot be displayed... this happens when i try to get on the forgotten password page, or help pages for forgotten passwords etc. Also for a new account, yet i can get onto other aspects of the hotmail help........... I'm so confused.... Please help... :(

  2. Huggamonsta!

Huggamonsta! Sugar & Spice and Everything Hugs

This is crazy! I don't have the trojan attacking my puter thankfully... but i still can't get onto anything! I tried the forgotten password page, but it says the page can't be shown...

Make a new account and see what happens.

  4. Huggamonsta!

Huggamonsta! Sugar & Spice and Everything Hugs

I can't even do that. I try and open the page and it says the page could not be opened or something similar...

  5. Huggamonsta!

Huggamonsta! Sugar & Spice and Everything Hugs

Umm... just discovered the same thing happens when i try to log onto O2 or say i've forgotten my password etc.... Yet i can still log on here, or a different mail thing. But O2 has the exact thing going annoyingly wrong...

  6. Huggamonsta!

Huggamonsta! Sugar & Spice and Everything Hugs

umm hotmail... msn messenger... msn explorer... and o2.co.uk have the problem

Hugga you say you can get online with that PC but cannot sign in to some websites?

I just logged into O2 just now..... I'm thinking you have your Privacy Settings a bit too high..... goto Tools > Internet Options > Privacy and set the slider to Medium High ( that works ok for me anyway )

  8. Huggamonsta!

Huggamonsta! Sugar & Spice and Everything Hugs

I had it set on medium... but i've reduced it to low to see what happens...

  9. Huggamonsta!

that hasn't made any difference.... :(

    Did you delete your cookies?

also try this program http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=730 it is a trial for 30 days but one thing it does well is to compleatly erase your Cookies, Temp Internet Folder and the Index.dat file which does hold info on your visited web sites... it maybe possible that this is holding some erronious data?

Once installed and started click privacy then make sure Internet Explorer is ticked and then click next it will wipe the Temp Internet folder and cookies then you will be given a prompt to restart your PC do so to erase the index.dat files.

other than this Hugga unless I was infront of PC I will have to do some more looking, but if you havnt already Email MSN

So you can view the main pages at Hotmail and O2 but when you enter your login and password you are taken to a "cannot find page"?

Are you using a PC linked to a network?

Do you have a Firewall program?

    Which windows version you using?

Have you run a Virus and Spyware check?

one quicky to try http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/813951/default.asp this is a possible fix, have you been updating windows before this happened?

  17. deepbluephoenix

    deepbluephoenix Private E-2

This is probably completely off the topic and useless BUT.... I believe that IE encrypts your passwords by the private/public key system... do you think it's possible that your keys are corrupted? If so, the only solutions I can imagine are to:
    a) use a different browser, e.g. firebird
    b) reinstall IE... which as far as I know is tricky... might need to reinstall Windows :S

  18. Huggamonsta!

Huggamonsta! Sugar & Spice and Everything Hugs

    Network.... meaning exactly... sorry!?
    No firewall..
    Windows XP
Yup, no viruses.... I've run the updated version of AVG
    i don't think i've been updating windows... ooh no i haven't...

  19. DavidGP

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

Ah sorry Hugga... by network I mean more than 1 PC connected to a router and sharing the same internet connection.

just to be safe try one or more of thes online AV scans as some AV programs DO miss some Trojans/Virii whereas some other pick them up.

    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
    http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
    http://security.symantec.com/

    Also if you havnt run
Ad-Aware for any spyware on your PC but remember once installed click "Check for updates Now" to get latest definition files!

I just want to rule out Spyware or Virii and trojans first as you say other PCs are ok with your login details, which mean its a problem with that PC you are using.

  20. Huggamonsta!

Huggamonsta! Sugar & Spice and Everything Hugs

Thank you... i'll try those. Yeah we have another computer using the same internet connection...

  21. Huggamonsta!

Huggamonsta! Sugar & Spice and Everything Hugs

Ooh... just run Ad-aware... i'm not sure what half of this means... but we had malware... umm... data miners? a few possibly browser hijack attempts... tracking cookies... some porn dialer thing......

is this all good or bad...

Okay it just got worse... now I can't get onto tiscali's passworded area now....... so that's msn...o2 and tiscali.... HELP!!!!

hmm, sounds like somthing in Internet Explorer has got screwed up... anyone know how to refresh root certificates? Might be the problem? Since its only with https, maybe thats whats causing the problem=.

And Adaware you can check everything.. its all pretty much safe to go :)

Aahhh what does that all mean...

I can't reinstall XP cos my dad is convinced it's my fault the computer is like this because of msn etc... so.... is there any other way around this problem... :(

Eeeeeeeeek!!! Thats some not so nice spyware you have their!

The good thing with Ad-Aware is that it backsup what you delete in a Quarantine file just in case....

out of that lot Tracking cookies are not too harmfull but the inclusion of browser Hijack and the porn dialer is more worrying!

Do you have any names for those as we can check what things they maybe doing to your PC?

BTW I went to Tiscali just now and the site loooks down and I get "Cannot Find Server"... I also did a Traceroute on there IP and it dies after 5 hops..... basically once it hits their network from mine, so this may just be a coincidence!

So to recap once again we have run AntiVirus and it found no Virii or trojans ?

Ran Ad-Aware for Spyware and found allsorts of nastys?

Now its upto you BUT I would erase all ot the Spyware Ad-Aware found..... I would also use East-Tec Eraser to file erase Cookies, Internet Temp Folder and the Index.dat... it does this automatically and will prompt you to shutdown to finish the procedure.

As you are also running XP it maybe wise to turn off System Restore reboot and do AV and Spyware checks again... then if all clear you can switch System Restore back on ( System Restore can hold Spyware .exe's and Viruses and restore them at reboot even when you have run an AV check SO turning off erases all restore points thus removing the nastys )

plus installing the XP update for IE I posted above could help aswell as it seems to fix a MSN and other login problem.

EDIT: As I type this Tiscali is back up albiet slower than treacle!

System Restore can be found by Right mouse click on My Computer > Properties > System Restore.

Tick the Turn off all drives > Apply

Run AV and Ad-Aware again to remove all Spyware like Goldy said.... then reboot.

I would then to make sure all Temp Internet files are removed run East-Tec Eraser it will prompt you to reboot.

Once rebooted run AV and Ad-Aware again if all OK turn back on System Restore by following the turn off route above but this time untick that box and hit apply.

You can then uninstall East-Tec if you wish as it will have done its job for you.

Then as you will have a free from spyware and and Virii PC we can go forward and narrow your problem down.

BUT install that Microsoft Update for IE http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/813951/default.asp

  32. Huggamonsta!

Okay i've done all that... except the internet explorer update... said i need service pack 1 to install..... umm... what am i trying to find here...?

also... ad-aware was free, and av

  33. DavidGP

DavidGP MajorGeeks Forum Administrator - Grand Pooh-Bah Staff Member

Ah ok.... do you have XP SP1 installed easy way to find out is Right Click My Computer > Properties and thr bottom line above registered to should read Service Pack 1

Off hand you can even if you dont have XP SP1 installed you can install Internet Explorer SP1 http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/ie6sp1/default.asp ( hope you are on broadband? )

What I'm trying to do is to narrow all possiblities down and some of those are IE security settings and update patches of which the one I posted earlier that you need IE6 SP1 for specifically mentions failed login in on MSN and other sites...

Please check this for me also while I remember GOTO Tools in IE then Internet Options > Advanced and tell me if SSL 2.0 is ticked or not? ( its down the bottom of the list )

YES Ad-Aware is free and well worth keeping on your PC ( nearly everyone here uses it ) and the on-line AV checks are free and always upto date with latest Virii BUT East-Tech Eraser is not free as its a 30day trial but served its purpose of removing all data compleatly.

  34. Huggamonsta!

    SSL.20 is ticked yes..
    and also i have XP-SP1

umm, have you downloaded all the patches for IE? have you downloaded SP1 for IE? thats different to XP-SP1.

You might want to try a registry cleaning program.. but we'll see how it goes.. should just be a matter of getting the latest service pack, and it'll fix itself..

Hugga bear with me as finding your problem will be slower when we are not in same room as you, I just want to try and cover all bases!

First off we I hope have removed all spyware and any virii that may have been lurking... then make sure ist not a IE6 problem.

So you installed IE6 SP1 and this update http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/813951/default.asp ?

    ok

now check another thing for me and its to do with security settings (its an easy one to check) Goto on IE ... Help > About Internet Explorer > tell me what it says for Cypher Strenght: *it should say 128-bit

If it doesnt it looks like the easiest thing is a re-install of Internet Explorer i'm afraid UNLESS any one of you guys/gals have any other input?

  38. Huggamonsta!

Huggamonsta! Sugar & Spice and Everything Hugs

Goldy - clean the system registry... how... ?
Halo - It does say 128 bit... umm........

    re-install IE it is then.

Okay, so, go to the link halo gave you. Download the update. Now, you need to make it think that IE isnt update (so it will update again) .

You can do this using a registry patch ive made for you
    www.nicholaslidster.plus.com/kate.reg

double click on that, and click yes (you do want to merge) and you will then be able to install the update again. Hopefully, this should cure the problem :)

  43. goldfish

    goldfish Lt. Sushi.DC

in this case i think its the only way to fix the problem... if youve scanned for viruses and spyware and all that kak, and also done sfc /scannow. (which i presume you did)

  44. Huggamonsta!

Huggamonsta! Sugar & Spice and Everything Hugs

Yeah i have... i'll try the sfc/scannow thing again.. in case i did it wrong or something... ... but i... oh well... i guess tommorow i'll be reinstalling it! Thanks

You mentioned that 2 computers are networked....
Someone has to have the ADMIN rights/identity in WinXP

Is that you or your Dad? and if your dad...has he changed any permissions in the Admin? If he is the Admin, he can set the puter up so to deny access to other users on the network.
His comp would be the primary and if he changed settings on his ...they would also change for yours.

Check it out....i know it is a simple thing..but some times we overlook these.

    Hope it is fairly simple...:);)

I think its a local thing, and also as it only has problems with encrypted connections...

But have a look. If your dad has been having problems, then it might have somthing to do with that. Worth checking... if you can.

What more of less makes me think this is Hugga's PC rather than that of the other one is that ( correct me if I read this wrong Hugga ) you can access those sites on the other PC?

Plus she can access the net from hers and login to sties MGs for example, the ones she cannot all AFAIK use encryption eg. Hotmail, O2 etc etc

with all that spyware located the other day its possible one of those has changed something.

re-installing IE is not as much a problem as re-installing XP Hugga.. the .reg file Goldy posted is just perfect for switching off XP block to installing an un patched Full version of IE6 ( will get link to download later if stuff below doesnt work )

BUT before re-installing IE6 try this...............

    Goto Control Panel > Add/Remove > Add/Remove Windows Components ( on left menu )

First as Goldy pointed out maybe Root Certificats are screwy so in same menu their is Update Root Certificates > untick it click next to uninstall them > go back into same menu and tick it to install them again.

Second we can run a repair or Internet Explorer by highlighting it and clicking Next ( you dont see any dialogue boxes but I gather it just repairs it )

Hello,,,, am new to posting at this site,,,,just like to lurk i guess!!
any ways,,, I had a problem like this before along with a few other nasties,,,,, try to use a program named spybot and run a scan on your c: drive,,,,,, it should clear it right up!!!!! it sounds like you have a trojan called Troj-Qhost
Hope this helps you buddy,,,,,,and to all,,,Keep up the great work with the board

    Hugga

Were are you upto on what you have compleated PLUS have you tried the above ( kookla647's suggestion on Spybot S&D ) as it may fine things AD-Aware missed!

IF your Dads machine will let you login to MSN & O2 etc etc then I believe its either a network/router issue BUT more likely a software problem and Internet Explorer looks the prime candidate at present.
