Black Screen with a mouse cursor

I have read through several threads and they talk about Vista...here is my situation:
When I start my desktop in normal or safe mode it gets to the Windows logo splash then straight to a black screen with only a mouse cursor. The cursor can be controlled, but no other keyboard or mouse functions. If I boot into advanced boot options I can get to the repair utility which says there is no problem. I can try to run a system restore, but it is running from the recovery partition and there are no restore points for it to find in the partition.

I am attaching very basic computer specs. I would be grateful for any assistance.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Why are you posting in the Malware Forum? Is there some reason that you would think malware was the cause of this? You can try running the below but there is a high probability that the problem is not malware.

Please do the below so that we can boot to System Recovery Options to run a scan.

For 32-bit (x86) systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to a flash drive.
For 64-bit (x64) systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64 and save it to a flash drive.

Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.

Enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:
    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
    • Select US as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
    • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
    • Select your user account an click Next.

On the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:
    • Select Command Prompt
    • In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.
    • The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
    • Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
    • In the command window type e:\frst.exe (for x64 bit version type e:\frst64) and press Enter
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
    • The tool will start to run.
    • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
    • Press Scan button.
    • It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please attach this file to your next reply. (See: How to attach)

You misunderstood what I asking. ;) I was really asking you why do you suspect malware. There has to be a reason why your first thought was malware rather than a Windows problem.

Also did not say this.;) I said it doubt your problem is due to malware. And the FRST log does not really show any major malware. Just one piece of junk software named SnapDo. We can remove that but I would be surprised if that is the cause of your PC not booting up properly. SnapDo came in with the below
    Code:
    2014-03-14 01:29 - 2014-03-14 01:29 - 00000000 ___DC () C:\Users\ROGUE\AppData\Local\YappyzUninstall
    2014-03-14 01:28 - 2014-03-16 21:58 - 00000000 ___DC () C:\Users\ROGUE\AppData\Local\Smartbar
    2014-03-14 01:28 - 2014-03-14 01:28 - 00000000 ____D () C:\Users\ROGUE\AppData\Roaming\ Angry_Birds

I have kids...my oldest plays Clash or Clans and wants gems (so do I). She told me she downloaded a "program" to get gems. I'm pretty sure it is one of the "cracks' online. It was shortly after she downloaded the program that the black screen appeared. My first thought was virus...it sounded like the FBI virus some other posts described.

Sorry...wishful thinking on my part. ;)

What should my next steps be?

    Thank you for the help!

Well we can give the below a try but I don't feel confident that this will fix your problem.

Download this >> View attachment fixlist.txt

Save fixlist.txt to your flash drive.
    • You should now have both fixlist.txt and FRST64.exe on your flash drive.
Now reboot back into the System Recovery Options as you did previously.
Run FRST64 and press the Fix button just once and wait.
The tool will make a log on the flashdrive (Fixlog.txt).
Please attach this to your next message. (See how to attach)

Now boot into normal Windows .

I wish I could say it was fixed, but I still have the black screen with the movable mouse cursor.

    Here is the requested log.

Again, thank you for spending time working on this.

Okay that is what I expected. As I stated earlier I did not think your problem was due to malware. Thus there is really nothing I can do for you here. And since you do not have any restore points, that course of action is of no use. And also since repair tells you that there is nothing to repair that is also a dead end.

I suggest that you post in the Software Forum to explore what other options may be available........ but wait, one thing that just occurred to me. You say when you boot up you get a black screen cursor, have you ever tried pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL to see if task manager will open?

I tried...but the screen just stays black. I will repost in the software forum. Thank you for all the effort and advice!
