Like the topic reads, simply what are some of the most important things you've learned in life? Lessons, ideas, or anything you think would be priceless information to hand down to a friend, family member, or even a curious stranger like me.

I'd love to know... Maybe it would save us some precious time in our lives, who knows?

Be kind, be courteous (IE; hold doors open for people, pick up something someone, who's hands might or might not be full, dropped etc) be considerate.

You've got nothing to lose by doing these actions but a lot to gain. :)

Listen to both sides of a story before coming to a conclusion.

Periodically leave the laundry or dishes or housecleaning and do something fun...it'll still be there tomorrow. (But don't leave it for too long!)

Measure twice, cut once. Might be a cliche, but it saves a LOT of head/heartache.

If you force yourself to smile when you don't want to, eventually you'll be smiling for real.

Always look for something positive. It might just be that you're not dead yet, but that, too, is an accomplishment to be proud of. My life motto for years has been, "You can either find something to laugh about, or you can shoot yourself in the head." This is not to say you shouldn't feel down when bad things happen, just that you can't stay down forever. *For most of us...I know there are those who suffer from depression, and that is something else entirely.

Be true to yourself, and don't compromise your principles just to get along. Odds are good if you have to go against your own moral compass, the people you are doing it for are not worth it.

Family, friends, and people in general are the MOST IMPORTANT in our lives.
I have had the awesome cars, beautiful houses, self employed, made good money. I lost everything several times including my precious family but have them back, (family), due to their enormous ability to forgive a former drunk.
I am now disabled, make less money than I ever have, and am happier than I have ever been. People! It is so weird. You guys are like family. I have you in my house every day. Sometimes a few times a day. So thanks to you all for making my life pleasant each morning as I click on MG's first thing and then do my studies.
The older I get the more exciting it is. Am in my mid sixties and so love my life.
PEOPLE! Learn to love the unlovely. Learn to forgive. Not forget. Forgive.
Oh, shut up Dave. These folks don't need to hear your ramblings.

    This. Many times over, this.

Don't waste your time trying to change, just to be accepted by someone who has no interest in appreciating you for who you are. You deserve better than that.

You can't change people they will only change if they want to.
Life is short so enjoy everyday.
You can't go back and do life over so do it right the first time.
Every story has two sides and the truth most often is somewhere in the middle.
    Don't listen to gossip.
Don't take people you care about for granted. Let them know how important they are to you. You will miss them when they are gone.
As mentioned before be nice. It is such a easy thing to do.
It is not all about you!!

    Don't get fat

-obesity is the cause for most medical issues, it hurts your view on yourself, how others view you(yes, everyone stereotypes/profiles. its part of who we are. its why looks matter)
---you'll save a lot of time and money if you don't get fat

Everyday do something that gets your heart rate up(exercise)

always save something from your paycheck for a rainy day.

absorb what's useful.(you might read, or watch, or experience mundane things, but likely you can absorb something from that time that is useful to you

stay positive. life is better when you are upbeat about it. No one is going to work to cheer you up, except you.

Keep your eyes on the front sight, and always carry a spare magazine. ;)

And do something random. Open a door for someone, let someone turn in front of you. Donate a couple of bucks to a charity. You will feel good afterwards.

Yeah, some back pain, but...we shall see.

She tensed up when she saw the car coming towards her.

The lady must have slammed on the brakes because it hit the bottom of her bumper and curled it under. Not sure if the exhaust is damaged.

Lady was cool, I guess. She freely admitted to our insurance that she was at fault.

The sad part is that it is a spotless black car with only 2k miles on it.

The happy part is I have the nice car again :-D

Treat others how you would like to be treated yourself.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If you can't say something nice then it's far better to say nothing at all.

Don't trust a person who never drinks or who hates dogs.

    Smoking causes cancer.

Fishermen may not lie but they often stretch the truth.

There are 10 types of people, those that know binary and those that do not.

Always treat a gun as loaded and never rely on someone else saying that a gun is not loaded without checking it yourself to be sure.

Accidents don't just happen there is always a cause.

Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit but it's so darn funny.

    Charity begins at home.

Be very suspicious of any deals that seem too good to be true because they probably are too good to be true.

A bunch of things I have picked up over the years;)

I've got to stay away from this... I'VE GOT TO STAY AWAY FROM THIS!
I quit last September. Smoked since I was 16/17 years old until around 23/24. Quit until I was about 27 and picked it back up for a couple years. Got to stay away from it for good.
Dr told me if I quit by the time I was 30 my lungs and body would still have the ability to regenerate. Said if I didn't he'd be telling me I have cancer before age 40.

  31. Sgt. Tibbs

    Sgt. Tibbs Ultra Geek

I'm certainly not going to discourage you from quitting, but I was told the same thing. I'll be 43 in April, still cancer-free, still smoking. ;)

  32. Fred_G

    Fred_G Heat packin' geek

Yeah, probably a scare tactic. But not smoking is a good thing! Keep it up!

  33. Sgt. Tibbs

    Sgt. Tibbs Ultra Geek

Definitely! But quit because you want to, not because someone else wants you to. That's 99% of the time why it doesn't work...just like dieting or giving up anything else you enjoy. If you don't actually want to do it, but are only doing to because of something someone else said, your odds for failure increase astronomically. Definitely keep quitting even if you fail, if that's what you actually want to do.

  34. Fred_G

    Fred_G Heat packin' geek

True dat. I don't think you could quit if you did not want to. :cool

Thanks man, I'm still young... But I've seen many go in my time. A friend of mine passed some months back, due to health issues some say was from drinking. Others said he had liver or organ problems from since he was a kid (I don't know for sure). I really want to be here to take care of my loved ones as long as I can. I think my biggest problem is lack of sleep. Have had the issue since I was 14. It's damn hard sometimes I can't sleep because too much on my mind. One of the reasons I started this thread was to hear any little points that could help me overcome the things we all experience in life.
